Viana do Castelo is one of the most beautiful towns in the Minho, and parking is simple if you know where to go. The Campo d’Agonia car park has the first hour free, the Gil Eannes car park and Praia do Cabedelo are free, and street parking costs nothing on Sundays and holidays. In Viana do Castelo, paid street parking is run by the Câmara Municipal itself, with meters on the central streets – it is not the EMEL system, which only exists in Lisbon. There is no low-emission zone and no urban toll. For longer visits, the large car parks by the river are the most practical choice.

Always read the meter: it shows the tariff, the paid hours and the maximum stay for that street. Outside the paid hours, and on Sundays and holidays, street parking is free.
The city has several public car parks close to Praça da República, some of them free.
Municipal underground car park with about 1,000 spaces by the river, west of the historic centre. The first hour is free and after that it is very cheap – ideal for long visits.

For a short visit, Campo d’Agonia (first hour free) or Gil Eannes (free) are hard to beat. To go up to Santa Luzia, Encosta do Elevador costs €2 a day.

Large free car park about 300 m from the beach, across the iron Eiffel bridge (built in 1878 by Gustave Eiffel’s company). Ideal for a beach or kitesurf day.
Metered street bays are free on Sundays and public holidays.

Campo d’Agonia or Gil Eannes, then walk. The central streets are narrow and many are pedestrian.
Take the Santa Luzia funicular from next to the station: €2 single, €3 return, about 7 minutes. Hours: June–September 09:00–20:00; March–May and October 09:00–18:00; November–February 10:00–17:00 (closed on Mondays). You can also drive up the hill road.
Use the Estação Viana Shopping car park. Linha do Minho trains reach Porto-Campanhã in about 1 h 10 to 1 h 45; for Lisbon, change in Porto.
Cabedelo and Amorosa are south of the river, Afife to the north. Cabedelo has a large free car park.
