Funchal is a compact city built on steep hills – and parking here ranges from easy to impossible depending on whether you know the system. The colour-coded line markings on the street are not decorative: white means free, blue means paid, and the letter “M” means residents only (park there as a tourist and you get a €60 fine). Covered garages run €1–2 per hour with daily caps around €8–15, while free options exist if you are willing to walk 10–15 minutes. This guide covers every zone, the best garages, free parking spots, and the apps that let you skip the coin-only meters.
Funchal uses coloured line markings painted on the kerb to indicate what type of parking is allowed. Misunderstanding these – especially the “M” spots – is the single most common parking mistake tourists make on Madeira.
| Line Colour | Meaning | Cost | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | Paid parking (Zona Azul) | €0.30/15 min (~€1.20/hr) | Mon–Sat, typically 8 AM–8 PM |
| White | Free parking, no time limit | Free | 24/7 |
| Yellow | No parking at any time | N/A – tow risk | Always |
| White with “M” | Residents only (Moradores) | €60 fine for tourists | Always |
Blue zone meters are enforced Monday to Saturday. On Sundays and public holidays, all metered spots are free. After 8 PM on weekdays, enforcement ends and blue zones become free until the next morning.
Funchal has five main covered garages within walking distance of the city centre. All accept cash and most now accept bank cards. Here is how they compare.
The most popular garage for visitors. Located on Rua José da Silva “Saca”, directly below the city centre. Well-lit, clean, and staffed. Accepts bank cards. The only downside is that it fills up quickly during peak hours – arrive before 10 AM in summer.
On Rua 5 de Outubro, a short walk uphill from the market area. This is the budget choice for overnight parking – just €4.50–5.00 per 24 hours, which undercuts every other central garage. Well-lit and covered. Not the newest facility, but clean and functional.
Compact garage on Rua Bela São Tiago, right next to the Old Town. If you are heading to Rua de Santa Maria for dinner, this is the closest covered parking. Rates are reasonable at €1 per hour with an €8 daily cap – one of the cheapest in the centre.
Located on Rua 5 de Outubro, close to Funchal’s main shopping area. A solid choice if Almirante Reis is full. Clean and well-maintained. Prices sit between the budget Santa Luzia and the premium Almirante Reis.
On Avenida Luís de Camões, connected to the hospital area but open to the public. This is the only Funchal garage you can pre-book online through Parclick, starting from €10.34 per day. Good for visitors who want a guaranteed spot during peak season without driving around.

Free parking exists in Funchal, but it requires either arriving early or being prepared to walk 10–20 minutes to the centre.
The largest free parking area near Funchal. Located at São Martinho, next to Praia Formosa beach, about a 25–30 minute walk (or short bus ride) from the city centre. Open 24 hours, no time limit. It fills up on sunny weekends but usually has space on weekdays. The setting is scenic – you park with an ocean view.
Residential areas in São Roque, Monte, and the upper hillside neighbourhoods have free white-line parking. The trade-off is a 15–20 minute downhill walk to the centre (and an uphill return). If you are fit and the weather is good, this is the simplest free option.
Some free street parking exists around the Botanical Garden, roughly 2 km from the centre. Not practical for a city-centre visit but useful if you are visiting the garden itself.
Funchal’s street meters are old-fashioned coin-only machines – they do not accept cards. If you do not carry coins, you need the app.
The only parking app that works in Funchal (and across Madeira and the Azores). Available on iOS and Android. You register, add a credit card, and can start/stop parking sessions from your phone. The key advantage is the “Start and Stop” feature: you only pay for the exact minutes you park, rather than buying a fixed time block from the meter. Top up via credit card – minimum €5.
The physical meters along blue-zone streets accept coins only. Rates are €0.30 per 15 minutes (€1.20 per hour). Insert coins, take the receipt, and display it on your dashboard. Enforcement officers do check – tickets are common in the city centre.
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Paid hours | Mon–Sat, approximately 8 AM–8 PM (check the sign at each meter) |
| Free hours | After 8 PM until 8 AM, all day Sundays and public holidays |
| Blue zones | €0.30/15 min (€1.20/hr) – coins or iParque app |
| White lines | Free, no time limit – first come, first served |
| Yellow lines | No parking at any time – tow risk |
| “M” spots | Resident-only – €60 fine for non-residents |
| Typical fine | €30–60 for parking violations; €60+ for M-spot misuse |
The tightest parking in Funchal. Streets around the cathedral and Mercado dos Lavradores are narrow and one-way. Use Almirante Reis or Park 5 de Outubro garages. Street parking in blue zones fills up by mid-morning in summer.
The painted-door street (Rua de Santa Maria) is pedestrianised – you cannot drive in. Park at São Tiago garage and walk. A few blue-zone spots exist on surrounding streets but they are competitive.
Hotels along the Estrada Monumental usually have their own paid parking (€10–20/day). Street parking here is limited but possible on white-line streets in the residential areas just above the main road.
Blue-zone parking along the marina fills quickly. The Marina Shopping centre car park is an alternative – typically €1.50/hour with a daily cap. Good option if you are visiting the waterfront or taking a dolphin-watching tour.
Madeira’s regional government is studying a new dynamic parking management model for popular tourist sites, including areas around Funchal. The plan focuses on managing traffic capacity at scenic viewpoints and hiking trailheads, with proposed rates of €2–4 per hour at high-demand mountain sites. No implementation date has been confirmed as of April 2026, but it signals a move toward more structured (and more expensive) parking at popular attractions outside the city.
Yes. All blue-zone metered parking in Funchal is free on Sundays and public holidays. You do not need to buy a ticket or use the app. Garages still charge their normal rates.
Parking Santa Luzia at approximately €4.50–5.00 per 24 hours. For free parking, Praia Formosa beach car park is the closest option, about a 25–30 minute walk from the centre.
Street meters are coin-only. However, the iParque Driver app (iOS/Android) lets you pay via credit card for all metered zones in Funchal. Most covered garages accept bank cards at exit.
The letter M stands for Moradores (residents). These spots are reserved for local residents with permits. Tourists who park in M-spots receive a €60 fine. The spots look like normal free (white-line) parking, which is why so many visitors get caught.
Yes. The SABA Hospital Cruz Carvalho garage can be pre-booked through Parclick, starting from €10.34 per day. This guarantees you a covered spot and is useful during peak cruise ship and holiday season.
Praia Formosa beach car park is the best free option. It is open 24 hours with no time limit, located about 2.5 km from the city centre. White-line streets in São Roque and Monte are also free but require a steep walk down to the centre.
In summer and during cruise ship days, finding a central spot can be stressful. The streets are narrow and steep, and blue zones fill up by mid-morning. Using a covered garage (arrive before 10 AM) or pre-booking removes the stress. Outside peak season, parking is manageable.
