Tirana (TIA) is one of Europe's cheapest rental markets – economy cars start at $9/day (~€8) in March and average $27/day (~€25) year-round. Sixt, Europcar and Avis have on-airport terminal counters and are the safe defaults. Local specialists like Cargini (Trustpilot 249 reviews) and Viaggiare Rent (90 reviews) offer better prices. Watch out for United Rent A Car and ACE Motors – multiple May 2026 Trustpilot complaints about lost deposits and refused vehicles. EU/EEA licences are valid as-is; US, UK, Canadian and Australian drivers should bring an IDP. Cross-border to Kosovo €20-40 fee, Montenegro €70-110 (Green Card now accepts digital PDF since Jan 2025), Greece usually banned.

Re-checked 2026 Tirana (TIA) prices, deposit and IDP rules; economy cars still start around €8/day in low season and Latin-alphabet licences remain accepted as-is.

How to get the cheapest rate in Tirana

1. Book in March or January

Cheapest months. Economy from $9-14/day.

2. Compare aggregators + local sites

DiscoverCars + Rentalcars first, then check local sites (cargini.rent, viaggiarerent.com) directly – sometimes 10-15% cheaper for the same car.

3. Book Super CDW upfront

€10-20/day via aggregator is much cheaper than counter Super CDW at €12-22/day – and the excess waiver is identical.

4. Pick up at TIA, not city offices

City branches in central Tirana are typically 15-25% more expensive than the airport.

5. Document everything at pickup

Film a walk-around video. Photograph each tyre, undercarriage, windscreen. Common Albanian rental disputes involve undocumented pre-existing damage – hardware is your only proof.

6. Avoid mid-summer peak weeks

July-August surge pushes economy cars to $35-55/day. Even shifting your trip one week into September drops prices 40-50%.
