Carvoeiro is one of the prettiest villages in the Algarve: ochre cliffs, a small beach at the foot of the valley and the Benagil cave a few kilometres away. The good news is that parking is largely free; only a few bays near the beach are paid. The difficulty, in summer, is finding a space. This guide explains where to park for the beach, the Algar Seco cliffs, Benagil and Praia da Marinha, and sets out the access rules for the cave.

Carvoeiro belongs to the municipality of Lagoa, where parking is, as a rule, free. Only a few metered bays right by Praia do Carvoeiro are paid. The real problem is therefore not the price but the space: the village sits at the bottom of a narrow valley and there are few places close to the beach.

Parking by the beach is organised but very limited. A few bays are paid; they suit a short stop, out of season or early in the morning.
The residential streets above the village, on both sides of the valley, have free parking. Keep garage entrances clear and respect the road markings.

For the village beach: park for free on the hillside and walk down. For a cliff walk: Algar Seco. For hiking: Vale Centeanes or Praia da Marinha.
Benagil has two free car parks: a small one at beach level, which fills very early in summer, and a larger one on the hill, a few minutes’ walk down a slope. The access road is narrow and queues are common in high season.
Rules for the cave: since 13 August 2024 it has been forbidden to land on the sand inside the Algar de Benagil or to reach it by swimming or on any floating device. Kayaks may only go there with a guide, and boats enter without landing. Book a guided trip rather than renting a kayak on your own.
The most photographed beach on this coast has a free car park on top of the cliffs, the starting point of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos), which runs to Vale Centeanes via Benagil. In midsummer it is often full by late morning.
Lagoa council plans to replace the Carvoeiro market with a new complex that includes 312 parking spaces on four levels. The project still has several approval stages to pass and construction would take about two years, so do not count on these spaces before around 2029.
Carvoeiro is reached from the A22 motorway (Lagoa exit), which has been toll-free since 1 January 2025, or from the N125. A small car is a real advantage on the steep village streets.
