Garaje Santa Catarina is an underground hotel garage on Rua de Santa Catarina, Porto's main pedestrian shopping street, with around EUR 1.50/h or EUR 16-18/day (USD 1.65 or 17-20) and 90 to 120 spaces. It sits 4 minutes' walk from Bolhão metro and 6 minutes from Avenida dos Aliados — the smartest base for shopping, the renovated Bolhão market, and the Praça da Batalha museums. It is a private garage (operated for the hotel above) accepting non-guests on a daily basis. Around EUR 5 to 8 cheaper per day than Saba Cardosas one block west. This guide covers the location, height limits, the LEZ situation (modern rentals clear it), payment methods, alternatives like Saba Cardosas and iPark Bonjardim, and how to reserve in advance.

Understanding parking zones around Santa Catarina

Rua de Santa Catarina is Porto's main pedestrian shopping street, sitting between Bolhão and Praça da Batalha. The street itself is fully pedestrianised; vehicle entry to the garage is via Rua Sá da Bandeira and side streets. Surrounding on-street parking is mostly EMEL Zone I (centre tariff). Porto's LEZ camera-checks the historic core; modern rental cars (Euro 5+) clear it.

Common trap: “Santa Catarina” can refer to either the pedestrian shopping street or the broader neighbourhood. The Garaje Santa Catarina specifically sits on side streets off the pedestrian section. Driving down Rua de Santa Catarina itself is not allowed — the entrance is on Rua Sá da Bandeira side. Follow the signposted access route from Avenida dos Aliados.

Open 24/7 with vehicle entry via the side-street entrance. Vehicle classes: cars (1.95 m height limit), motorcycles in shared bays. Hotel guests above get integrated billing; non-guests pay at exit by card or cash.

Capacity: iPark Bonjardim 495 spaces (largest), Saba Cardosas 250, Estádio do Dragão P+R 800, Trindade 200, Garaje Santa Catarina 120 (smallest of the centrals).
Day rate ladder: Estádio do Dragão P+R EUR 1.50; Trindade EUR 12-15; iPark Bonjardim EUR 15; Garaje Santa Catarina EUR 16-18 walk-in or EUR 11-13 reserved; Saba Cardosas EUR 22-25 walk-in or EUR 14-17 reserved. Garaje Santa Catarina is mid-range: cheaper than Saba but closer to shopping than iPark or Trindade.
Covered + secured: All five are fully covered with security cameras. iPark Bonjardim is the newest (2023) with the best facilities; Garaje Santa Catarina has 24-hour hotel reception above adding a security presence.
Book a parking spot in advance: We use Parclick to reserve central Porto garages. Garaje Santa Catarina reserved drops the EUR 16-18 walk-in to EUR 11-13/day. Especially useful Saturdays during the Bolhão market or December holiday shopping season.

Free parking near Garaje Santa Catarina

Free options near Santa Catarina shopping street are limited because of central Porto's Zone I tariff. Three reasonable choices.

Boavista (after Avenida da Boavista no. 1500)

White-line free parking thins past number 1500 going west on Avenida da Boavista. About 20 minutes' walk back to Bolhão / Santa Catarina, or 4 minutes by metro from Casa da Música. Useful as a backup when central garages fill.

Vila Nova de Gaia (south of river)

Free street parking around Sandeman, Cálem and Graham's wine cellars on the Gaia hillside. Walk over Dom Luís I bridge in 5 minutes to Ribeira; metro D from Jardim do Morro to Bolhão takes 6 minutes. Many Porto locals use this to avoid the centre LEZ entirely.

EMEL evenings (after 19:00)

EMEL on-street parking around Santa Catarina is free between 19:00 and 09:00 the next morning, plus all of Sundays and public holidays. Best for evening dining or shopping after 19:00. Re-park before 09:00 on weekday mornings to avoid fines.

Tip: If you arrive on a Sunday, EMEL on-street parking is free everywhere — including the streets directly outside Garaje Santa Catarina. Why pay EUR 16-18 indoors? Save the cost for Monday onwards.

Paying for parking (apps and meters)

Three apps cover Porto's Zone I street parking. Garaje Santa Catarina accepts cash and card at the exit barrier.

Telpark — official Porto app

Telpark is the official Porto municipal app, run by EPorto / STCP Serviços. Two-minute sign-up. Service fee around EUR 0.15 per session. Covers all on-street paid parking and several garages including Saba Cardosas and Casa da Música.

Already have a Via Verde transponder? Garaje Santa Catarina does NOT support ViaT plate-recognition. Use card or cash at the exit. Saba Cardosas and Casa da Música do support it if your rental car has the toll device.

EasyPark — pan-European

EasyPark covers Porto street parking and many garages. Best if your road trip continues elsewhere in Europe. Service fee around 15 percent.

Coin and card meters

Standard parquímetros take coins (EUR 0.10 to EUR 2) and contactless cards. The 2-hour limit in Zone I is enforced — do not buy two consecutive tickets. Note: ePark from Lisbon does NOT work in Porto.

Parking by area

Bolhão Market and Rua de Santa Catarina

The renovated Bolhão market reopened in 2022 and Rua de Santa Catarina is Porto's main pedestrian shopping street with department stores, cafes (the historic Café Majestic at no. 112) and the legendary Capela das Almas blue-tiled chapel. Garaje Santa Catarina is the closest indoor lot. iPark Bonjardim is 5 minutes' walk, slightly cheaper.

Avenida dos Aliados (5 min walk)

Porto's main civic boulevard. From Garaje Santa Catarina walk down Rua de Santa Catarina then turn right at Avenida Sá da Bandeira to reach Aliados in 5 minutes. The Câmara Municipal palace, McDonald's Imperial (one of Europe's grandest fast-food interiors) and Livraria Lello (10 minutes uphill) are all walkable.

Sé and São Bento (8 min walk)

Porto's medieval cathedral and the famous azulejo-tiled São Bento railway station. Walking from Garaje Santa Catarina takes 8 minutes via Rua das Flores. Driving into Sé area is technically allowed but the streets are 1.5 m wide and the LEZ applies.

Ribeira (UNESCO riverside)

Cobbled, stepped, photogenic and impractical to drive into. Park at Garaje Santa Catarina, walk 12 minutes downhill via Rua das Flores. The funicular dos Guindais (EUR 2.50) saves the climb back.

Casa da Música and Boavista (6 min metro)

Different neighbourhood, west of the centre. From Garaje Santa Catarina the metro from Bolhão (yellow line) to Casa da Música takes 6 minutes. Better to switch to a Boavista garage if your hotel sits there.

Tourist trap: Some “private” parking notices (with a fake fine number) are placed by unaffiliated companies on streets near Bolhão. Portuguese courts have ruled these notices unenforceable. Do not pay them, but keep them as evidence. Never accept a “guard” at the curb who waves you into a free space and demands EUR 5 — genuine street parking is metered or free, period.

Tips

  • Verify your rental is Euro 5 / 6 before driving into the centre
  • Reserve Garaje Santa Catarina on Parclick for 30+ percent savings
  • Confirm vehicle dimensions: 1.95 m height, ~5 m length
  • Use Telpark for street parking; ePark from Lisbon does not work in Porto
  • Park free at EMEL evenings (after 19:00) and Sundays
  • Use Estádio do Dragão Park & Ride if you are a day-tripper from outside Porto
  • Do not try to drive down Rua de Santa Catarina pedestrian street — restricted access
  • Do not park on yellow lines, even briefly — EUR 60 fine
  • Do not pay informal “watchers” more than EUR 1-2 if at all
  • Do not exceed 2 hours in Zone I street parking
  • Do not leave valuables visible in the car at street parking
  • Do not assume Garaje Santa Catarina has space at peak times — book Saba Cardosas or iPark Bonjardim as backup

2026 update

Garaje Santa Catarina added contactless card payment at the exit barrier in early 2026 (cash still accepted). Day rate held steady at EUR 16-18 walk-in. Parclick reserved rate dropped slightly to EUR 11-13 per day. Porto LEZ camera coverage unchanged from 2025. Telpark added Apple Pay support at all Zone I meters in March 2026. The renovated Bolhão market is now in full operation, increasing weekday visitor volume to the Santa Catarina area.

Yes — fully covered indoor garage with security cameras and 24/7 access. Around 120 spaces. Height limit 1.95 m, length around 5 m. Most economy and compact rentals fit; mid-size SUVs (Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 3008) usually fine. The hotel above adds 24-hour reception presence.

Yes — available on Parclick. Reservation drops the EUR 16-18 walk-in to EUR 11-13 per day. Book at least 24 hours ahead for guaranteed space. Useful at weekends or during the December holiday shopping season when Bolhão / Santa Catarina foot traffic peaks.

iPark Bonjardim is bigger (495 spaces vs 120), slightly cheaper (EUR 15/day vs EUR 16-18 walk-in), and 5 minutes further from Santa Catarina shopping street. Both are modern indoor garages with security cameras. Pick Garaje Santa Catarina for closest walk to shopping; pick iPark Bonjardim for guaranteed capacity and EV chargers.

No — Garaje Santa Catarina does not have ViaT plate-recognition. Use card or cash at the exit barrier. Saba Cardosas and Saba Casa da Música in Porto support ViaT for ticketless entry. Most tourists do not need this feature.
