Cascais on-street parking is colour-coded (blue zone = paid, red axis = no parking, yellow = no stopping), tariffed Mon–Sat 09:00–19:00 and FREE on Sundays and public holidays. Hourly rate on blue lines is €0.80–€1.60 (~$0.87–$1.74) depending on street, with a 2–4 hour cap. The municipal Parque Marechal Carmona costs only €5/day (~$5.45) and is open 24h – the cheapest gated option next to the centre. Pay via the MobiCascais app or paySimplex, or coins/contactless at on-street meters. Cabo da Roca has a free car park (ignore anyone asking for cash – it is a known scam) and Guincho beach charges around €2/day at its two lots.

Understanding Cascais parking zones

Cascais operates a colour-coded on-street system under MobiCascais (Regulation 1204/2023 in Diario da Republica). Zones tell you whether you can park at all, and at what rate.

Line colourMeaningDay rateNotes
BlueShort-stay paid parking, the default in central streets€0.80–1.60/h (~$0.87–1.74)Pay at meter or app, free Sundays and holidays
GreenLonger-stay paid parking, further from the centreLower than blueSame hours, free outside enforcement
Yellow lineNo parking / no stoppingNational Highway Code
Red axisNo parking – emergency / loading onlyResidents' free benefit does NOT apply here
Resident benefit does not cover tourists: the 180 minutes/day free perk is tied to the Viver Cascais resident card and the MobiCascais app. As a visitor you pay full tariff. Park on blue lines outside 09:00–19:00 Mon–Sat or all day Sunday to park for free.

Free parking near Cascais

Hipodromo Municipal area

A large public area used as free parking on non-event days, roughly 15 minutes' walk to the centre. Verify the kerb colour before leaving the car.

Avenida Dom Carlos I (waterfront)

Paid 09:00–19:00 Mon–Sat, free after 19:00 and all day Sunday. The fastest free option in summer evenings.

Streets around Alameda dos Combatentes

Behind the train station, outside the ZETDL perimeter, you find unpaid bays. Fill up early in summer. Check signage before parking – resident-only sections exist.

Sunday hack: all blue and green zones are FREE on Sundays and public holidays. Park anywhere central without paying as long as you leave before Monday 09:00.

How to pay in Cascais

MobiCascais app

The official municipal app for iOS and Android. Lets you pay on-street, in municipal car parks, and access resident benefits. Register a card, GPS picks up the zone, you confirm the licence plate and duration. Stop the session for minute-by-minute billing.

paySimplex

Officially adopted by CM Cascais for on-street remote payment by app or SMS. Same network used in Oeiras, Leiria and Torres Vedras – useful if you already have it from another Portuguese stay.

Telpark (Empark garages)

The Telpark app pays at Empark-operated parks like Largo da Estacao. Prebooking unlocks discounted day passes vs the gate rate.

Coin / contactless meters

On-street meters accept coins from €0.10 and contactless Multibanco/Visa/Mastercard. Print the ticket and place it lisibly behind the windscreen. Remote extension only works through MobiCascais or paySimplex.

Parking by neighbourhood

Cascais Old Town (Vila)

Mostly pedestrianised. On-street is limited blue / red. Park at Largo da Estacao or Marechal Carmona and walk.

Marina

Use Parque Marina de Cascais (866 spaces, 24h). Surrounding Avenida Rei Humberto II is tariffed blue zone.

Praia da Rainha and central beaches

Blue zone, 09:00–19:00 Mon–Sat. Bays on Rua Frederico Arouca are reserved for reduced-mobility holders only.

Boca do Inferno

Free roadside parking along the cliff approach, first come first served. Walking distance from the centre, fills up midday.

Guincho and Cabo da Roca (Parque Natural)

Inside Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. Guincho has two paid car parks at around €2/day (~$2.18). Cabo da Roca has a free car park – anyone asking for cash there is running a scam.

Cabo da Roca scam alert: reports persist of informal “attendants” demanding 5–10 euros at the Cabo da Roca car park. There is no parking fee – the lot is free. Refuse politely (a firm “nao, obrigado”) and walk away.

What is new for 2026

The 1 November 2023 General Regulation remains in force. Resident free parking was extended from 100 to 180 minutes/day on 1 January 2025 and stays at that level through 2026. Tariffs are frozen – the municipality confirmed no 2025 increase and no public 2026 increase has been announced. paySimplex is the latest officially supported on-street payment method. Cascais has not announced new ANPR enforcement specifically for 2026.

Tips and pitfalls

  • Default to Marechal Carmona at €5/day for any visit longer than 4 hours
  • Pay via MobiCascais or paySimplex – faster than feeding meters
  • Park Sundays for free in central blue/green zones
  • Prebook via Parclick for July–August (Estoril Residence is bookable)
  • Free P+R-like option: Hipodromo on non-event days
  • Never pay an “attendant” at Cabo da Roca – the lot is free
  • Never park on the red axis – tow risk
  • Never expect the resident 180-min free benefit as a tourist
  • Never leave a paper ticket out of sight – tickets fly off in coastal wind
  • Never drive into Cascais Vila pedestrian streets without a permit
