Do you need a car? Not for Cascais itself: the old town, the bay and Boca do Inferno are walkable, and trains run along the coast to Lisbon. Street parking in Cascais is run by the municipal company Cascais Próxima, not by EMEL, which only operates in Lisbon. Paid streets are graded by demand: red axes are the busiest streets in the town centre, followed by orange and yellow axes, and blue axes cover places such as the beach roads. The price, the paid hours and the maximum stay are set per street, so the sign and the meter next to your car are what count. You pay at the meter or in the official MobiCascais app.

In August 2026 the city council confirmed to the fact-checking site Polígrafo that a red-zone street in the centre of Cascais costs €1.80 per hour, is charged from 8:00 to 22:00 and has a maximum stay of four hours, so the most you can pay for one stay is €7.20. Quieter streets further from the centre are cheaper and may have shorter paid hours, but Cascais Próxima does not publish a full price list online. Before you walk away, check the sign at the meter or open MobiCascais, which shows the zone you are in.

Cascais Próxima runs about ten car parks across the municipality. They do not publish their prices online, so the rate is shown at the entrance. These are the most useful for visitors (hours from the official list):

All of them take cash, Multibanco cards and MB Way, and most also take Via Verde. Marechal Carmona, Cascais Center and the station car park are the closest to the old town and the bay.
Parclick lists three car parks in the Cascais area, all covered. None is in the old town itself, but the Estoril one is on the seafront road and works well for Tamariz beach and the casino.

For visitors, free parking means streets without paid-parking signs, which are mostly in residential areas away from the centre and the seafront, and paid streets outside the hours on the sign. The council publishes no list of free car parks for visitors, so we do not name any. Do not rely on the old rule of thumb that all of Cascais is free on Sundays: paid hours are set per street, and the centre’s red zone is charged until 22:00.

Parking offences in Cascais are fined under the national Highway Code (Código da Estrada). If you find a notice on the windscreen, you have five working days to identify yourself to Cascais Próxima and settle it; otherwise a formal offence notice follows. With a rental car, the fine reaches the rental company, which passes it on with an admin fee. Towed cars go to the pound at Avenida Tenente Coronel Melo Antunes in Carcavelos (+351 214 833 714), open 9:00–20:00 on weekdays and 9:00–18:00 on weekends and holidays.
