Portugal mixes barrier tolls (A1, A2 – ticket in, pay out by cash/card/Via Verde) with electronic-only free-flow motorways where gantries read your plate and there is NO cash option. For a foreign or rental car on electronic stretches: EASYTOLL (link a bank card to your plate at border terminals, 30 days), a prepaid TOLLCard, or a Via Verde Visitors transponder. Rental cars usually carry a Via Verde device billed through the rental company. The ex-SCUT motorways (A22 Algarve, A23, A24, A25, A4 Transmontana and others) are toll-free since 1 January 2025; remaining tolls rose on average 2.3% in 2026.
