Key takeaway: Monte Gordo sits in the eastern Algarve next to the Spanish border, making it the perfect base for half-day drives across two countries. The five best routes – to Tavira (30 min), Castro Marim (10 min), Alcoutim (50 min), Ayamonte in Spain (15 min via the Guadiana International Bridge), and the inland Serra de Loulé (80 min) – all stay under 90 km and avoid the busier N125 traffic of the western Algarve. Petrol is about 1.65 euros (1.82 dollars) per litre in Portugal and 1.45 euros (1.60 dollars) per litre across the border in Spain – fuel up south of the Guadiana.
Monte Gordo is a low-rise beach resort in the Sotavento (eastern) Algarve, 4 km from the Spanish border. Its central location means you can reach the salt pans of Castro Marim, the Roman ruins of Tavira and the hilltop villages of the Serra without driving more than 80 km in any direction. The A22 motorway (free for Portuguese-registered cars, tolled via the SCUT system for foreign plates) runs parallel to the coast and the older N125 carries the slow but scenic traffic.
Portugal petrol: 1.65 euros (1.82 dollars)/litre. Spain petrol: 1.45 euros (1.60 dollars)/litre. A22 toll Monte Gordo–Faro (110 km): about 5 euros (5.50 dollars). Guadiana International Bridge: free both ways. Cross-border filling at Repsol Ayamonte saves about 12 euros (13 dollars) per tank.
Drive west along the N125 from Monte Gordo for 30 minutes (28 km) through pine forest, salt pans and Roman ruins before reaching Tavira's twin-spire skyline. The route bypasses the A22 toll booth, runs through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and ends at one of the Algarve's most photogenic towns.
From Monte Gordo head west on Avenida Marginal, joining the N125 at the Vila Real roundabout. The road skirts the Ria Formosa Natural Park and crosses Manta Rota and Altura – both have free seaside parking before 9:30 in summer. Cacela Velha is a 5-minute detour off the N125 (signposted “Cacela Velha 3 km”) onto the EM513; park free at the church and walk down to the viewpoint for clifftop salt-pan views.
Tavira itself has a strict zona azul (1.00 euros/hour) in the centre – park free across the Tavira river at Largo das Portas do Sol or use the new Saba garage on Avenida Dom Manuel I (1.20 euros/hour, 9 euros/day).
Just 10 minutes (8 km) west of Monte Gordo lies Castro Marim, a small town dominated by a 13th-century castle that the Knights Templar used as their Algarve headquarters. The salt pans surrounding it form the Reserva Natural do Sapal, the Algarve's primary flamingo wintering ground.
Take the N122 north out of Vila Real for 8 km. Castelo de Castro Marim has free parking at the bottom of the hill (Largo do Pelourinho), and the climb to the castle is 5 minutes. The Reserva do Sapal interpretation centre is 2 km further north on the EN122; entry is free and the boardwalks run 3 km through the salt pans. Bring binoculars – flamingos are present October through March.
The Guadiana river forms the Portugal-Spain border for 95 km. Alcoutim is a Portuguese village 50 km north of Monte Gordo, facing its Spanish twin Sanlúcar de Guadiana across a 60-metre stretch of river. A small open-air rowboat ferry shuttles between the two banks for 1.50 euros (1.65 dollars).
Take the IC27 north from Vila Real for 38 km, then the EN122 final 12 km along the river. Alcoutim's castle has free parking near the entrance. The famous Limite Zero zip-line (15 euros/16.50 dollars) lets you cross to Spain in 1 minute – the world's only international zip-line. Note: passport not required since Portugal and Spain are both Schengen, but ferries on busy summer Sundays can have 30-minute waits.
The Guadiana International Bridge takes 5 minutes from Monte Gordo to Ayamonte, the first Spanish town across the border. Petrol is 12-15 % cheaper in Spain – locals stock up here. The town itself has good tapas bars and a small Moorish fortress.
Cross via the IC27 to the Ponte Internacional do Guadiana, then continue 2 km into Ayamonte. Parking is free along Avenida Andalucía and around Plaza de la Laguna. Spain runs one hour ahead of Portugal in summer – check your watch when shops open and close. The hour-difference confuses many drivers: if your phone shows 16:00 you arrive at 17:00 Spanish time.
The Serra de Loulé sits 80 km west of Monte Gordo on the A22 motorway. The route takes you to the cork-oak interior – whitewashed mountain villages, Roman bridges and the medieval town of Querença. A full day's drive with multiple stops.
Take the A22 west to junction 13 (Loulé) – 75 km from Monte Gordo. Exit north onto the N270 for 10 km to Querença. The village has free parking at the church square. Adjacent Rocha da Pena nature reserve has a 5 km loop trail (free entry). Return via Salir and the N396 back to the A22.
Compare rental cars from Faro or Sevilla airports: with the right operator and full Algarve insurance, you can drive on both sides of the border without restriction.
Check live rates through DiscoverCarsThe A22 motorway is “free flow” – no toll booths, just gantries that scan your plate. Portuguese-registered cars use the local Via Verde transponder. Foreign-plate rental cars are billed automatically through the rental company (usually 5-10 euros per pass plus a 1.50 euros admin fee). Confirm at pickup whether your rental includes the transponder or you need a separate “EASYToll” device (collected at the border).
Schengen means no passport check, but you do gain or lose an hour. Spain is UTC+1, Portugal UTC+0. Most Algarve rental contracts allow free unlimited driving into Spain – confirm at pickup. Sat-nav apps (Google Maps, Waze) handle the cross-border switch correctly.
The Repsol Ayamonte station 200 m after the Spanish side of the bridge is the closest cheap fuel – usually 0.15-0.20 euros per litre below Portuguese prices. Pay cash if your card has foreign-transaction fees.
Built-up areas 50 km/h, N-roads 90 km/h, motorways 120 km/h. Spain limit on dual carriageways is 100 km/h, motorways 120 same as Portugal. The N125 between Monte Gordo and Faro has stretches of 50 km/h around villages – watch the signs.
Tavira: zona azul plus Saba garage. Vila Real de Santo António: free street parking outside the Pombaline grid. Castro Marim: free at the castle. Ayamonte: free along Avenida Andalucía.
