A hire car is the best way to see Tavira and the eastern Algarve: the prettiest spots – Cacela Velha, the Ria Formosa, Castro Marim's salt marshes, Barril beach and the hill villages of the Serra – have little or no public transport. Faro Airport (about 30 minutes west on the toll-free A22) has the cheapest, widest choice of cars, while a few suppliers deliver to Tavira itself. Economy rates run roughly €9–20/day off-season and €35–60/day in summer. This guide covers where to rent, what it costs, and the best drives and sights you can reach with a car from Tavira.

If you are flying in, collect at Faro Airport (FAO) – far more suppliers and the lowest prices – and drive the toll-free A22 east to Tavira in about 30 minutes. If you are already staying in Tavira, a handful of operators (and eastern-Algarve locals like EPI in Monte Gordo) deliver to the town. Compare the all-in price including insurance and deposit before booking.
A tiny whitewashed hamlet on a bluff above the Ria Formosa lagoon, 15 minutes east of Tavira – one of the Algarve's most photogenic spots, with a fort, church and a beach reached by a short boat hop. Park in the village edge; it fills early in summer.
West of Tavira at Pedras d'el Rei, a miniature train (or a 1.3 km walk across the lagoon) reaches Barril beach and its famous field of rusting tuna-fishing anchors. Drive to the Pedras d'el Rei car park.
20–25 minutes east: a hilltop castle, the Reserva Natural do Sapal salt marshes (flamingos and salt pans), and Pombaline-grid Vila Real on the Guadiana river facing Spain. The Ayamonte (Spain) bridge is minutes further.
Head inland on the M-roads into the Serra do Caldeirão for cork-oak hills, quiet villages and the medronho-distilling country – an easy half-day loop that few visitors see.
From Tavira's riverfront, ferries cross to Tavira Island's long sandy beach. Park near the Tavira ferry quay or use the town car parks (paid blue zones in the centre, free further out).

Approximate, via the toll-free A22 / local roads
Central Tavira uses paid blue-zone bays near the river and old town; free on-street parking starts a few minutes' walk out, and there are car parks by the market and riverside. In July and August arrive early or park on the edge and walk in.
The A22 along the Algarve is toll-free since January 2025, so all these drives cost nothing in tolls. Fuel in May 2026 is about €1.85–2.01/L petrol and ~€1.95/L diesel, cheapest at supermarket pumps. A compact uses little over these short distances – budget €30–45 of fuel for a week of eastern-Algarve sightseeing.
For the town itself, no – Tavira is walkable. But the best sights (Cacela Velha, Castro Marim, the Serra villages, quieter beaches) have little public transport, so a car makes them accessible.
Faro Airport (about 30 minutes west on the toll-free A22) has the most suppliers and lowest prices. If you are already in Tavira, some operators and eastern-Algarve locals like EPI (Monte Gordo) deliver to the town.

Mostly yes out of season. In summer, village and beach car parks (Cacela Velha, Pedras d’el Rei for Barril) fill by mid-morning – arrive early. Central Tavira uses paid blue-zone bays with free parking a short walk out.
