Alvor is the perfect base for the western Algarve's best drives – in under an hour you can be on Fóia, the Algarve's highest peak, above the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos, or among the sea caves of Carvoeiro. Most routes are toll-free on scenic N-roads, and the A22 motorway (free since 2025) gets you between them fast. Here are the four drives worth your fuel in 2026.

| Route | Distance (one way) | Drive time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alvor → Monchique & Fóia | ~35 km | 50 min | Mountain views over both coasts |
| Alvor → Lagos & Ponta da Piedade | ~15 km | 20 min | Golden cliffs, grottoes |
| Alvor → Ferragudo & Carvoeiro | ~20 km | 30 min | Fishing village + Algar Seco caves |
| Alvor → Silves | ~25 km | 30 min | Moorish castle, orange groves |
Take the N124/N266 north through cork oaks and eucalyptus to the spa town of Monchique, then the final winding climb to Fóia (902 m) – on a clear day you'll see both the south coast and the west coast at once. The road is well surfaced with proper hairpins; brake before the bends, not in them, and watch for cyclists on weekend mornings.
Twenty minutes west via the N125 (or the free A22) brings you to Lagos. Park at the Ponta da Piedade lighthouse lot and walk the clifftop boardwalks above the Algarve's most photographed sea stacks. Go early – the lot is modest and tour traffic builds from mid-morning.
East around the Arade river: Ferragudo is the postcard fishing village (tight streets – park at the entrance and walk), then continue to Carvoeiro for the Algar Seco rock formations and boardwalk. Sunset here is special.
Follow the orange groves up the Arade valley to Silves, the Algarve's old Moorish capital – red sandstone castle, cathedral and riverside cafés, with easy free parking by the river on weekdays.

Monchique & Fóia – a real mountain road with a summit view over the whole western Algarve. Allow half a day with stops.
No – the N-roads are free and the A22 motorway has been toll-free since 2025.
It's a proper mountain climb with hairpins but well surfaced and signed. Any rental car manages it – just use engine braking downhill.
At the village entrance lots – the lanes inside are too narrow. It's a five-minute walk to the waterfront.
Early morning for calm seas and empty boardwalks; late afternoon turns the cliffs deep gold but brings crowds.
