The cheapest park and ride for Barcelona is the AMB P+R network: eight car parks in towns such as Viladecans (155 spaces) and Castelldefels (100) where parking is free on weekdays from 5:00 to 23:00, for up to 24 hours, if you register in the AMB P+R app and travel on a multi-trip ticket such as the T-casual (€13.00 for 10 journeys). Inside the city, the BSM car parks at Plaça del Fòrum, Rius i Taulet, Sant Genís and Marquès de Mulhacén cost €4.00 an hour, or from €21.00 for a 24-hour day card booked online. All four are inside the ZBE low-emission zone, which applies on weekdays from 7:00 to 20:00.
Do you need a car? Not for Barcelona itself, where the metro, buses and your feet do the job better. A car pays off for Montserrat, Sitges, the Costa Brava or the Penedès wine country. There are two very different systems. The AMB P+R car parks of the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona sit next to stations in the towns around the city and are free, but only on weekdays and only if you travel on by public transport. The BSM municipal car parks on the edge of the city centre (Plaça del Fòrum, Rius i Taulet, Sant Genís–Vall d’Hebron, Marquès de Mulhacén) are ordinary paid car parks next to metro stations. BSM no longer lists a special park-and-ride ticket, so you pay the normal rate or book a day card.

The ZBE Rondes de Barcelona covers more than 95 km²: Barcelona (except the Zona Franca and Vallvidrera, Tibidabo and Les Planes), L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and parts of Esplugues and Cornellà. It applies on working days, Monday to Friday, from 7:00 to 20:00. Cars with a DGT label 0, ECO, C or B drive in freely; cars without a label may not.

The AMB lists eight open P+R car parks. Parking is free for registered users, Monday to Friday from 5:00 to 23:00, for up to 24 hours from the moment you start the service in the app. They do not run at weekends or on public holidays.

How to use it. Download the free app “AMB P+R Aparcaments d’Intercanvi Metropolitans” and register your car. Park, start the service in the app, travel by public transport, validate your ticket at the car park’s checking machine when you come back, then end the service in the app. One public-transport trip between start and end is enough. If you park without starting the service, or overstay the 24 hours, you can be fined.
Tickets that count: T-casual, T-familiar, T-usual, T-jove, T-grup, T-4, Rodalies Bonotren 10 and Renfe monthly passes. Tickets that do not count: single and return tickets, T-dia, T-16, T-verda and T-esdeveniment. With a 10-journey ticket such as the T-casual you validate every time you use the P+R; a T-mobilitat card registered in the app is validated automatically when you travel.

BSM (Barcelona de Serveis Municipals) runs these four car parks, which were set up as the city’s park-and-ride sites. All are open 24 hours, charge cars €4.00 an hour by the minute and accept payment through the SMOU app.
Entrances at Avinguda d’Eduard Maristany 4 and Carrer de Sant Ramon de Penyafort 1, by the Fòrum and the coast at the north-east end of the city. Metro L4 and the tram stop at El Maresme | Fòrum. Maximum height 2.15 m.
Entrances at Avinguda de Rius i Taulet 2 and Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina 16, next to the Fira and the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc, a short walk from Plaça d’Espanya (metro L1 and L3). Maximum height 2.00 m. The only one of the four bookable on Parclick (rating 4.3 from 904 reviews). Book BSM Rius i Taulet on Parclick.

The T-casual costs €13.00 for ten journeys, so the rest of the ticket stays usable for the rest of your trip. A single metro or bus ticket does not unlock the free AMB P+R.
Day trip on a weekday, older car: an AMB P+R such as Viladecans or Castelldefels, then the train into the city. You stay outside the ZBE.
Weekend visit: the AMB P+R is closed to the free scheme at weekends, but the ZBE does not apply either. Plaça del Fòrum or Rius i Taulet with a day card is the simplest choice.
Several days with a compliant car: a BSM Parking Card for 2 days (€36.75), 3 days (€42.00) or 7 days (€68.25) at the car park nearest your accommodation.
