Street parking in central Barcelona costs €3.25 an hour in 2026 for a car with a C label (€2.50 with an ECO label), and €3.00 an hour in the outer districts. You pay within the hours on each street sign, generally between 8:00 and 20:00, and August is not free. City-run BSM garages charge €4.00 an hour, and Parclick showed central car parks from €1.44 for an hour on 28 October 2026. Do you need a car? Not for Barcelona itself: the metro, buses and your feet are faster than finding a space in the Eixample. A car pays off for Montserrat, Sitges, Girona or the Costa Brava. Street parking in Barcelona is run by the city company BSM under the name AREA. There are two colours that matter to visitors. In the blue area (Àrea Blava) anyone can park for the time shown on the sign. The green area (Àrea Verda) is mainly for residents, and visitors pay a higher rate there, also with a time limit. The price depends on two things: the zone (tariff A in the Eixample and Ciutat Vella, tariff B in the rest of the city) and the DGT environmental label of your car. Most rental cars in Spain carry a C or ECO label.

What an hour of parking costs in Barcelona

The city sets regulated parking generally between 8:00 and 20:00, but each street has its own hours on the sign (many central streets are paid Monday to Saturday, and some beach areas also on Sundays). Outside the hours on the sign, parking is free. August is not free: paid parking has applied all year since 2016.
You pay at the meter, which asks for your number plate, or in the smou app, where you pay only for the minutes you use and can extend from your phone. If you overstay by no more than half of the time you paid for, you can cancel the parking notice for €9 at a meter or in the app (areaverda.cat).
Tariff A covers the area inside a line formed roughly by Avinguda Diagonal, Plaça de les Glòries, Avinguda Meridiana, the Ciutadella and the port, Avinguda del Paral·lel and Carrer de Tarragona. This is where most visitors want to be, so it is also where spaces are hardest to find.

BSM runs the city’s own underground car parks, for example Moll de la Fusta on Passeig de Colom (height limit 1.95 m). On 28 October 2026 the walk-in rate there was €0.066776 per minute, or €4.00 an hour. Very little in the centre. Almost every street in the Eixample and Ciutat Vella is blue or green, so free spaces are found only outside the hours shown on the signs. The realistic free option is to leave the car outside the city: the AMB runs eight park-and-ride car parks in nearby towns (Castelldefels, Viladecans, Sant Just Desvern, Cornellà, Sant Joan Despí and others). They are free on weekdays from 5:00 to 23:00 if you travel on with a valid integrated public transport ticket such as a T-casual. Our Barcelona park and ride guide lists all of them.
The whole city inside the ring roads, plus parts of neighbouring towns, is a low-emission zone. On working days, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 20:00, cars without a DGT environmental label may not drive in. Spanish rental cars have a label, so they are fine. Cars with foreign number plates must be registered in the metropolitan ZBE register before they enter, even if they meet the standard. The fine is €200. The Rondes themselves are not restricted.
