Parking in Palermo: Your Guide to Paid and Free Options

Parking in Palermo — Baroque Quattro Canti with Monte Pellegrino and a white rental car
Safe & CHeap parking
All locations

Palermo is Sicily's capital and one of the hardest Italian cities to drive in: strict ZTL cameras in the historic centre, blue lines everywhere, and aggressive towing. Blue zones cost €1/hour, covered garages charge €12-24/day, and Palermo Airport (PMO/Falcone Borsellino) offers P1 at €22/day and P2 at €14/day. This guide covers every painted zone, the best guarded garages near the Cathedral and Quattro Canti, free parking outside the Viali, Punta Raisi airport, and how to avoid the three classic Sicilian tourist parking scams.

Understanding Palermo Parking Zones

Palermo uses the standard Italian colour system, but the ZTL is one of the most aggressively enforced in Italy and cars parked wrongly are regularly towed.

Line colourMeaningCostHours
BluePaid parking (Strisce Blu)€1/hrMon-Sat 08:00-20:00
WhiteFree with discFreeDisc 1 hr max
YellowResidents / taxis / busesProhibited
GreenDisabled permit onlyProhibited without permit
ZTL trap: Palermo's “Traffico Limitato” covers the entire historic centre from Piazza Indipendenza to La Cala. Cameras active Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00 and Thu-Sat 20:00-02:00 (ZTL notturna). Each unauthorised pass: €83.

Blue meters run Mon-Sat. Sundays and holidays free on blue lines, but ZTL stays active on Sunday during July-August peak season.

Best Guarded Garages in Palermo

Palermo has several guarded garages just outside the ZTL. Paying €20/day beats a €83 fine or a tow (€150 + pound fees).

Covered vs open-air

Sicilian summer: 38°C in July-August. Covered mandatory for rentals (leather, electronics, tyres). Open-air acceptable in shoulder season.

Book Palermo parking in advance: We use Parclick to reserve central garages and PMO airport. Booking saves 20-40% versus drive-up rates and guarantees a spot in peak season.

Free Parking in Palermo

Free parking exists but requires 15-25 minutes' walk or bus.

Viale della Libertà (north)

Residential avenue with white-line (disc 1 hr) and some free zones. Bus 101/102 to Politeama in 10 min.

Parco della Favorita

Royal park in the north-west. Roadside parking free. Combine with Mondello beach trip. Bus 806 into the centre.

Foro Italico Umberto I

Seafront promenade just east of the ZTL. A few free spots at the start of the Foro. Fills at weekends.

Sunday tip: Blue-line meters free on Sundays. ZTL notturna (Thu-Sat 20:00-02:00) stays active every week; summer ZTL can cover Sunday daytimes too.

Paying for Parking: Apps and Meters

AMAT manages Palermo parking. Two apps dominate.

EasyPark

Primary app across Sicily and Italy. Registration in 2 min, pay by the minute, remote extension from your phone.

App advantage: EasyPark sends a 15-min expiry warning. Essential during a long Palazzo dei Normanni tour.

MooneyGo and TelePass Pay

Both work in Palermo. MooneyGo also covers AMAT transport tickets. TelePass Pay useful if you already have an Italian motorway transponder.

Coin meters

Common on residential streets. Keep €5-10 in €1 and €2 coins — they rarely give change or take foreign debit cards.

Parking by Area

Historic centre (Quattro Canti, Cattedrale)

Do not drive here without a ZTL hotel permit. Use Teatro Massimo or Indipendenza and walk.

Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO / Punta Raisi)

P1 short-term (€2.50/hr, €22/day) 2 min from terminal. P2 long-term (€14/day, €60/week) with 5-min shuttle. External operators (ParkVia, Quick Parking) €6-8/day with 10-min shuttle. Airport is 35 km from the centre via A29.

Kalsa and Foro Italico

Historic quarter to the east. No ZTL within Kalsa itself but very narrow streets. Park at Foro Italico and walk 10 min.

Politeama (Piazza Castelnuovo)

Northern commercial district. Several blue-line streets plus Parking Politeama underground. 15 min walk to Cathedral.

Mondello (main beach)

Palermo's main beach. Paid parking €3/hr in summer, free off-season. Arrive before 10:00 in July-August or take bus 806.

“Parcheggiatori abusivi” scam: Men in vests installed on free public spaces (especially Mondello and Foro Italico) demand €2-5. Not officials. Ignore politely but firmly — local police advise against paying.

Tips for Stress-Free Parking in Palermo

2026 Parking Update

Palermo City Council extends the ZTL notturna from June 2026 to include Via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele Thu-Sun 20:00-02:00. A new 400-space car park is planned under Villa Bonanno (opens late 2026). AMAT tariffs remain stable but evening paid hours may extend to 22:00 in summer.

Covered garages like Teatro Massimo and Basile are secure 24/7 with cameras. Avoid street parking in Kalsa or near Stazione Centrale at night — pickpocketing and smash-and-grab incidents occur.
