There is no official car park at the Colosseum: the closest garages, on Via Capo d’Africa and Via Ostilia about 400 m away, cost from €24–25 for 3 hours, while ATAC blue lines cost €1.00–1.20 an hour. The ZTL Centro Storico is closed to unauthorised cars Monday to Friday 6:30–18:00 and Saturday 14:00–18:00. The cheapest plan is the Laurentina park-and-ride (€1.50 for 12 hours) and metro line B straight to Colosseo station.

Do you need a car? Not for the Colosseum: metro line B stops right outside, and central Rome is easier on foot and by public transport. A car pays off for Tivoli, Ostia Antica or the Castelli Romani. The Colosseum sits at the edge of Rome’s ZTL Centro Storico, the camera-controlled limited traffic zone, and the streets around it are busy and short of spaces. You have three realistic options: a blue-line street space, one of the small staffed garages on the Celio side of the Colosseum, or a park-and-ride car park on metro line B, which stops at Colosseo station right outside the amphitheatre.

All three are small, staffed garages: you hand over your keys and the attendants park the car. Plan for their closing time, since the car stays locked in overnight.

ATAC charges €1.00 an hour on blue lines outside the ZTLs and €1.20 an hour inside them. A short stop costs €0.20 per 15 minutes (at the meter only), and a reduced ticket covers up to 8 hours for €4. ATAC lists electric, hybrid and car-sharing vehicles as exempt. Source: ATAC blue-line tariffs.
For a full day of sightseeing, the cheapest option is to leave the car outside the centre. ATAC’s Laurentina car park at the southern end of metro line B charges €1.50 for 12 hours (ATAC tariff checked on 15 October 2026), and line B runs straight to Colosseo station opposite the amphitheatre. The whole area is inside Rome’s Fascia Verde low-emission zone. Under the ordinance valid until 31 October 2026, petrol cars up to Euro 2 and diesel cars up to Euro 3 may not drive there Monday to Saturday. The rules from 1 November 2026 had not been published on 22 October 2026. Modern rental cars are not affected.
There is no free car park next to the Colosseum. Do not pay unofficial attendants who wave you into a street space.
