Key takeaway: The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a 10-minute walk from the official Parking Pietrasantina (3 euros / 3.30 dollars per day, free LAM Rossa shuttle to Piazza dei Miracoli). Do NOT drive into the historic centre – it is a ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) with automatic camera enforcement and a 90-euro (99-dollar) fine for unauthorised entry. Coach parking is mandatory at Pietrasantina for tour buses.

Understanding Pisa parking

The Comune di Pisa manages parking through Pisamo (Pisa Mobilità). The historic centre (Centro Storico) including the area around the Leaning Tower (Piazza dei Miracoli) is a strict ZTL active 24/7. Only residents and hotels with registered guests may enter. Parking for tourists is concentrated at Pietrasantina, just outside the city walls.

ZTL Centro StoricoOnly residents and hotel guests with permitForbidden without permitn/a (90 euros fine)
Zona blu (blue zone)Anyone with a ticket1.50–2.00 euros / hour (1.65–2.20 dollars)2 hours
Zona gialla (residents)Residents free; visitors pay1.20 euros / hour1 hour for non-residents

Common trap: The ZTL is monitored by automatic plate-reading cameras at every entry point. Foreign-plate cars receive the 90-euro (99-dollar) fine by post 6-8 weeks later. Hotels can register your plate for 24-48 hours – send your registration to the hotel 48 hours before arrival.

The free LAM Rossa shuttle

The LAM Rossa is a continuous bus line operated by Autolinee Toscane, free with any Pietrasantina parking ticket (validate at the parking exit). Stops at: Piazza dei Miracoli (Tower), Pisa Centrale train station, Galileo Galilei Airport. Runs every 10 minutes 7:00-22:00.

Coach parking

Pietrasantina is the only authorised coach parking. All other coach drop-offs in the centro are banned and fined 200 euros.

Skip the ZTL fine: reserve Pietrasantina if visiting on summer weekends, when the lot can fill by 11:00.

Free parking near the Leaning Tower

Free options exist but require a 15-20 minute walk – or take the LAM Rossa.

Via Pietrasantina (extension)

Beyond the paid Pietrasantina parking, the same street has free white-line spaces about 600 m north. 15 minutes walk or 5 minutes on the LAM Rossa shuttle.

San Giusto neighbourhood (south of train station)

Residential streets south of the train station have free parking. 20 minutes walk to the Tower or 6 minutes by bus Line 1.

Tip: the 3-euro Pietrasantina parking is so cheap that free parking is rarely worth the longer walk. Save the time and just pay.

Practical tips for parking in Pisa

  • Always use Parking Pietrasantina for the Tower – 3 euros/day plus free shuttle is unbeatable.
  • Download MyCicero before arrival – meter machines can jam in summer.
  • Stay outside the ZTL boundary or stay at a Pisa hotel inside the ZTL that will register your plate (send registration 48 hours ahead).
  • If arriving by train at Pisa Centrale, walk 25 minutes to the Tower or take the LAM Rossa shuttle (free from the station bus stop).
  • Avoid Pisa on May 1 (Cassi Festival), June 17 (Luminara di San Ranieri), and the last Sunday of June (Gioco del Ponte) – all parking saturates by 11:00.
  • Visit early: arrive at Pietrasantina by 9:00 and the Tower by 9:30 for the shortest tower-climb queue.
  • Do not drive into the ZTL – the camera fines arrive 6-8 weeks later, untouchable from abroad.
  • Do not assume free parking is worth the walk – Pietrasantina at 3 euros is already cheap.
  • Do not park in orange loading zones Mon-Fri 8-13h – tow trucks patrol.
  • Do not park beside fire hydrants or in disabled bays – automatic tow.

What's new in 2026

Pisamo upgraded all blue-zone meters to contactless validation in March 2026 – paying via MyCicero no longer requires a printed ticket. Pietrasantina added 12 free Type 2 (22 kW) EV chargers in February 2026 – first-come first-served (4 hours max). A new ZTL Ambiente (low-emission zone) for the historic centre is in public consultation, expected for 2027.
