Nantes — France's 6th-largest city — has one of the most progressive parking systems in Europe, combining a city-center ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone restricting non-clean vehicles), an extensive Park & Ride network with tram connections, and competitive private garages. For visitors, the smart strategy is to park outside the city center at a P+R lot like Cardo (€2.50 with tram included), then take the tram into the historic core. This guide covers the actual 2026 prices, the ZTL rules and €35 fine for non-clean vehicles, the best P+R locations by tram line, and the central garages worth using if you must drive in.
Nantes's Park & Ride system is one of Europe's best — €2.50 includes parking + tram for up to 7 passengers.
Since September 2021, Nantes has operated a ZTL covering the historic center. Access between 4:00 AM and 11:00 PM is restricted to “clean vehicles” — natural gas, electric, or hydrogen-powered. Diesel and petrol vehicles without a Crit'Air sticker classification of 1 or 2 face automatic camera enforcement and a €35 fine.
All vehicles entering Nantes's ZBE (Low Emission Zone, broader than ZTL) need a Crit'Air sticker. EU residents can purchase online before arrival (€3.72). Without sticker: €68 fine. Most modern rental cars (post-2011 petrol, post-2015 diesel) qualify for Crit'Air 1-2. Verify with rental company.
P+R Le Cardo is the model — 197 spaces directly at tram Line 2 “Cardo” stop. €2.50 for up to 24 hours of parking PLUS unlimited tram rides for the entire day for up to 7 passengers (incredible value). Drive 10-15 min from city center, park, hop on tram (15 min to historic center). Best total cost for any city visit.
Same €2.50 deal as Cardo — parking + tram for up to 7 passengers. 140 spaces at tram Line 2 “Recteur Schmitt” stop. Slightly closer to city center than Cardo (less tram time) but smaller capacity. Backup option when Cardo is full.
For visitors arriving from the south or west, P+R René Cassin offers the same deal but on tram Line 1. 65 spaces — smaller, fills up faster. Good for early arrivals or shoulder-season visits.
Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE) is 11 km south of city. Multiple parking options on site (P0 €3.67/day budget option, premium covered €15-25/day). For airport stays of 3+ days, on-site is competitive with off-airport park-and-ride after factoring in the airport surcharge.
If your destination is inside the ZTL (clean-vehicle-only zone) and you have a Crit'Air 1-2 vehicle, central garages are an option. Otherwise stay on P+R.
Underground garage near Place Graslin and the Théâtre Graslin. €2-2.50/hour, €18-22/24h. Central, walking distance to Passage Pommeraye and Quai de la Fosse. Best for visitors with Crit'Air 1-2 staying in central hotels.
Underground garage near Place du Bouffay and the medieval district. €2-2.50/hour, €20-24/24h. The most central option for old-town exploration. Often busy on weekends.
Surface and underground combination near the Saint-Pierre Cathedral. €1.80-2.20/hour, €15-20/24h. Slightly cheaper than Graslin/Bouffay, 5-7 minutes walk to most attractions.
Genuinely free parking is rare inside Nantes proper. Outer suburbs (Carquefou, Vertou, Rezé) have free white-line residential parking, but you'll need a 30-45 min commute by tram or bus. Only worth it for budget visitors with light bags.
P+R lots (Cardo, Recteur Schmitt): €2.50/24h INCLUDING tram rides for up to 7 passengers. Central garages (Graslin, Bouffay, Allard): €18-24/24h. Street parking (where allowed): €2/h. P+R is by far the best deal for tourists.
A Limited Traffic Zone covering the city center, active 04:00-23:00. Only clean vehicles (electric, gas, hybrid with Crit Air 1-2) can enter freely. Diesel/petrol with Crit Air 3+ stickers face €35 automatic camera fines.
Yes, all vehicles entering the broader ZBE (Low Emission Zone) need a Crit Air sticker. Without one: €68 fine. Buy online before arrival (€3.72). Most modern rental cars (post-2011 petrol, post-2015 diesel) qualify for Crit Air 1-2.
Only if it has Crit Air 1 or 2 sticker. Most modern rentals do. Confirm at pickup. Otherwise, use P+R Cardo + tram, which is cheaper anyway (€2.50 vs €18-24 for central garages).
P+R Le Cardo is a Park & Ride with 197 spaces at tram Line 2 Cardo station, 10-15 minutes from central Nantes. €2.50 covers parking for 24h PLUS unlimited tram rides for up to 7 passengers same day. Best deal in any French city of this size.
Esplanade du Cardo, Orvault — northwest of central Nantes on tram Line 2. Drive there from Nantes ring road (périphérique), park, take tram into city. Easy to find with GPS.
15 minutes by tram Line 2 to Commerce stop (heart of the city), 18-20 minutes to Bouffay (medieval district). Trams run every 5-7 minutes during the day.
Yes. P+R René Cassin (tram Line 1, 65 spaces) for visitors from the south. P+R Recteur Schmitt (tram Line 2, 140 spaces) closer to center. Same €2.50 deal applies.
Yes, the €2.50 covers up to 24 hours. For multi-day stays, pay €2.50 each day. Cheaper than any central hotel parking. Return tickets from the tram are valid all day.
On-site parking from €3.67/day (P0 budget) up to €15-25/day (premium covered). For 3+ day stays, on-site is competitive with off-airport park-and-ride. The airport is 11 km south of central Nantes.
