Do you need a car? Not for Metz itself: the station, the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the cathedral and the old town are all within walking distance. For Luxembourg, Nancy or the Moselle valley, a car helps: compare car hire in Metz on DiscoverCars (or at Metz-Nancy-Lorraine Airport) and work out the trip with our fuel cost calculator and France toll calculator.
On 2 January 2026 the City of Metz brought in a new on-street tariff, together with a new operator for paid street parking. There are five visitor tariffs, labelled A, B, C, F and G in the official decision. The two most central tariffs are short-stay: zone A gives the first hour free and zone G the first two hours free (once per half-day, and only with a ticket from the meter or the app). Further out, zones C and F are built for long stays at about €1 an hour. Check the tariff letter on the meter before you pay: the city decision does not say which streets belong to which zone.

What parking costs in Metz
Official tariffs and Parclick prices, 29 October 2026
All five tariffs end in a final step that equals the €30 parking charge, so overstaying is never cheaper than moving the car. The table shows the official prices at the meter or in the app:
| Time | Zone A | Zone G | Zone B | Zone C | Zone F |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 h | Free | Free | €1.80 | €1.00 | €1.00 |
| 2 h | €7.00 | Free | €4.00 | €2.00 | €2.00 |
| 3 h | – | €5.40 | €12.00 (max) | €3.00 | €2.00 |
| 5 h | – | – | – | €8.10 | €2.00 |
| Maximum stay | 2 h 30 (€12) | 3 h 30 (€14.40) | 3 h | 8 h (€14.40) | 8 h 30 (€12) |
The free period needs a ticket. In zones A and G you must still take a free ticket at the meter or start a session in the app; without it you cannot claim the free time. The free period is granted once per half-day. Full tables: City of Metz tariff decision (PDF).

The paid hours and days are posted on each meter; the 2026 tariff decision does not state them, so we do not quote them here.
We could not find an official City of Metz or Eurométropole de Metz page on 29 October 2026 announcing driving restrictions in a low-emission zone (ZFE). If you drive on to Strasbourg, Paris or Lyon, a Crit’Air sticker is needed there. It costs €3.85 and should only be ordered from the official website certificat-air.gouv.fr; foreign-registered cars use the same site. Rental cars registered in France usually have one already.
Gare de Metz and Centre Pompidou-Metz: Urbis Park Gare – Centre Pompidou or Q-Park Mazelle.
Cathedral, Saint-Jacques and the pedestrian centre: Indigo Saint-Jacques; on the street, look for zone A or G signs to use the free period.
Full day in Metz: a long-stay zone C or F street space or a covered car park booked on Parclick.
