Street parking in central Milan costs €3 per hour inside Area C (maximum two hours), €2 in the inner ring and €1.20 in the outer districts; driving into Area C costs €7.50 a day, Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 19:30, and nothing at weekends. The cheapest way to visit is an ATM park-and-ride at a metro terminus, from €1.50 for five hours, while a bookable garage day ticket starts at €10.50. This guide covers the 2026 tariffs, Area C and Area B rules, car parks by district and where to park for less.

✓ UP TO DATELast updated: 14 October 2026
Rewritten from Comune di Milano and ATM sources: Area C corrected to €7.50 on weekdays only, with no weekend charge, official blue-line tariffs, park-and-ride bands and real bookable car parks added; invented garages, prices and fines removed.

Do you need a car? Not for Milan itself, where the metro is faster than driving. For Lake Como, Bergamo or the Alps you do: compare prices at Milan Malpensa Airport on DiscoverCars or Linate Airport, and read our guide to car hire in Italy.

How Parking Works in Milan

Three separate systems apply to drivers. Street parking on blue lines (strisce blu) is run by ATM for the city and priced by zone. Area C is the charging zone inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni ring: on weekdays you pay €7.50 a day to drive in. Area B covers most of the city and costs nothing, but cameras keep out the oldest petrol and diesel cars. Outside the centre, ATM’s park-and-ride car parks at metro termini are the cheapest way to leave the car for the day.

Blue-line parking is free every night between midnight and 8:00. Each zone has a code printed on the sign, and the tariff, hours and maximum stay belong to that code, so read the sign before you pay.

Area C: the €7.50 Charge for the Centre

Area C is the historic centre inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni. According to the Comune di Milano, it is active all year from Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 19:30, except on public holidays. Cameras at the entry gates read every number plate. Saturdays, Sundays and weekday evenings after 19:30 cost nothing.

Standard daily ticket€7.50Unlimited entries with the same vehicle on the same day
Ticket bought in a partner garage€4.50Only if you park there for more than an hour; activate by midnight the same day
Late ticket (paid within 7 days)€22.50Requires registration on the MyAreaC portal
Hourly rate in partner garagesMaximum €4 per hourList of partner garages published by the Comune

How to pay. Buy the ticket online on the Area C portal, at Intesa Sanpaolo cash machines, at ATM parking meters, at SISAL and PUNTOLIS tobacconists, or through UnipolMove or Telepass (Telepass only for Italian-registered vehicles). The ticket carries a PIN that you link to your number plate. You may do this from the day you enter until midnight of the following day; a ticket activated the day before your visit does not count.

Older car? Payment does not help every vehicle. Petrol cars up to Euro 3 and diesel cars up to Euro 5 are banned from Area C. Rental cars are almost always newer, but if you drive your own car, enter the plate and its country in the Comune’s online checker before you set off.

Street Parking: Blue Lines and Tariffs

ATM’s tariff table, valid since 1 November 2023, divides the city into three rings. The closer you get to the Duomo, the higher the price and the shorter the stay.

ZoneTariffWhen you pay
Inside Area C (centre and Bastioni)€3 per hour, maximum 2 hours per zone codeEvery day 8:00–19:00
Inside Area C, evening€3 per hour for the first 2 hours, then freeEvery day 19:00–24:00

Around San Siro stadium and the hippodrome on event days€1.20 per hour or €10 for the whole day8:00–24:00

Parking meters take coins, bank cards, Mastercard and Visa. You type in your number plate, so the receipt no longer has to go on the dashboard. You can also pay by app; ATM names EasyPark and MooneyGo, the two apps that also sell monthly street-parking passes.

Where to Park in Central Milan

For the Duomo, the Galleria and Brera, a garage is easier than hunting for a two-hour blue bay. Remember that a garage inside the Bastioni means driving into Area C on weekdays, which adds €7.50 (or €4.50 if the garage is a partner garage and sells you the ticket). These car parks can be booked on Parclick; prices are the lowest shown when we checked and change with the date.

Cheapest Option: Park-and-Ride and the Metro

Free street parking near the centre does not exist in practice, but the ATM park-and-ride car parks come close. They sit at metro termini on the edge of the city and charge by time band, not by the hour. Our Milan park-and-ride guide lists all 21 car parks.

Up to 5 hours€1.50
5 to 10 hours€2.00
10 to 15 hours€2.50

Most of these car parks open on working days from 5:30 to 1:00, and you cannot collect the car while they are closed. The metro ticket is separate: €2.20 for 90 minutes, €7.60 for a day or €15.50 for three days. A day in the centre from Famagosta therefore costs €2.50 for parking plus two metro tickets, a fraction of a central garage plus Area C.

Area B: the Low-Emission Zone

Area B covers most of Milan. It costs nothing to enter, but cameras check vehicle classes from Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 19:30. Cars currently banned are petrol Euro 0–3 and diesel Euro 0–5. A modern rental car passes both Area B and Area C rules without problems.

Where to Park by District

Duomo, Galleria and La Scala: Car Central – Duomo or Garage Sforza, both inside Area C. On a weekday, factor in the €7.50 Area C ticket.

Brera and Quadrilatero della Moda: blue bays inside Area C are limited to two hours, so a garage or the metro (M3 Montenapoleone, M2 Lanza) is more practical.

Milano Centrale and Porta Garibaldi: Settembrini near Centrale or The Big at Garibaldi, both outside the Bastioni ring.

San Siro: the blue lines around the stadium switch to the event tariff (€1.20 per hour or €10 for the day). Lampugnano park-and-ride on the M1 is the alternative.

Pre-filled with the inner-ring blue-line rate (€2 per hour). Inside Area C it is €3 per hour with a two-hour maximum, and in the outer districts €1.20. For a full day, a park-and-ride costs €2.50 for up to 15 hours. On weekdays add €7.50 for Area C if you drive into the centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

The daily ticket costs €7.50, or €4.50 if you park for more than an hour in a partner garage inside Area C and buy the ticket there. Area C is charged Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 19:30, except public holidays.

Yes. Area C only operates on weekdays from 7:30 to 19:30, so you can drive into the centre on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and weekday evenings without a ticket.

Blue lines cost €3 per hour inside Area C (maximum two hours per zone code), €2 per hour in the inner ring and €1.20 per hour in the outer districts. Parking on blue lines is free between midnight and 8:00.

Buy the ticket and link it to your number plate from the day you enter until midnight of the following day. If you miss that, a late ticket costs €22.50 within seven days, through the MyAreaC portal.

Use an ATM park-and-ride car park at a metro terminus such as Famagosta or Lampugnano: €1.50 for up to five hours or €2.50 for up to 15 hours, plus €2.20 per metro ticket.

Parclick lists Car Central – Duomo from €3 for an hour and SABA Cardinal Ferrari Low Cost at €10.50 for a day; both can be booked in advance.

Petrol cars up to Euro 3 and diesel cars up to Euro 5 are banned on weekdays from 7:30 to 19:30. Newer cars, including almost all rental cars, can enter free of charge. The Comune’s plate checker also works for foreign plates.

Not for the city itself, where the metro is quicker than driving. A car is worth it for Lake Como, Bergamo, Franciacorta or the Alps; pick it up at Malpensa or Linate and leave it at a park-and-ride when you visit the centre.

Before You Park: Quick Checklist

  • Weekday before 19:30 and heading inside the Bastioni? Buy the €7.50 Area C ticket and link it to your plate by midnight of the next day.
  • Inside Area C, blue bays allow a maximum of two hours per zone code.
  • Read the zone code on the blue-line sign: it sets the tariff and the hours.
  • Long day in town? A park-and-ride at a metro terminus costs €2.50 for up to 15 hours.
  • Driving your own older car? Check the plate in the Comune’s Area B and Area C checker.
