Parking in Málaga: Blue Zone, SMASSA Garages & Free Hours 2026

Parking in Malaga cover – zones, garages and free hours

Parking in Málaga rewards a little strategy: the city's blue-zone street parking (SARE, run by municipal operator SMASSA) costs about €1–1.60/hour but caps you at 150 minutes – while a dozen SMASSA underground garages charge €1.60–2.50/hour with no time limit and live availability in the app. Add the 900-space Muelle Uno garage on the waterfront and the free evening/Sunday windows, and a beach-and-museums day gets cheap. Here's the 2026 playbook.

The Blue Zone (SARE): How It Works

Regulated hours run Monday–Friday 9:00–14:00 and 16:00–20:00, Saturday 9:00–14:00. Outside those windows – weekday lunchtimes, evenings after 20:00, all of Sunday and holidays – blue-line spaces are free. Pay at the meter or via parking apps; the 150-minute cap means it's for short visits, not beach days.

Local rhythm: arrive after 14:00, park free in a blue bay until 16:00, feed the meter for the late afternoon and you're free again from 20:00 – a full evening in the centre for a couple of euros.

Garages: the No-Stress Choice

SMASSA's 12 underground car parks ring the historic centre (Alcazaba, Camas, Salitre, Cervantes…) at €1.60–2.50/hour, with real-time space counts in the SMASSA app – check before you drive in. For the seafront, Muelle Uno's ~900 spaces put you under the port promenade, the Centre Pompidou and a ten-minute walk from La Malagueta beach.

Old-town driving: the historic core is camera-enforced restricted access (like a Portuguese/Spanish ZTL). Don't follow the GPS to your hotel door – navigate to a garage entrance instead.

Day-Trip Logic

  • Museums day: SMASSA Alcazaba or Cervantes garage, everything on foot
  • Beach day: Muelle Uno or Salitre, promenade walk to La Malagueta
  • Sunday: street parking is free – arrive early for the centre
  • Apps (ElParking, Telpay-style) extend meter time remotely
