Parking in Siena costs €2 per hour in the central car parks, €1.50 per hour on the street and just €2 for a whole day at the railway station car park, which has a free escalator up to the old town. You cannot drive into the walled centre: it is a limited traffic zone with cameras that work 24 hours a day. This guide shows where to leave the car, what each option really costs and how hotel guests get through the gates legally.
Want a guaranteed space? The municipal car parks cannot be reserved, but one private garage near Porta Ovile can be booked ahead on Parclick from €2.50 per hour. Worth it on summer weekends and around the Palio.
Siena sits on three ridges, and the medieval centre inside the walls is closed to visitors’ cars. A ring of multi-storey car parks surrounds it, most of them a short walk or an escalator ride from the sights. They are run by Sigerico (Si.Ge.Ri.Co.), the municipal company that used to be called Siena Parcheggi. If an older guide sends you to the Siena Parcheggi website, the information now lives on Sigerico’s site, and several prices have changed.
The quick version: day visitors on a budget use La Stazione, anyone who wants the shortest walk uses Il Campo or Santa Caterina, and people staying overnight in town ask their hotel for the discounted rate.
| Option | Price | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| La Stazione car park | €0.50 first hour, €2 all day | 480 spaces, free escalator towards Porta Camollia, free on Wednesdays 08:30 to 15:00 |
| Il Campo, Il Duomo, Santa Caterina, San Francesco | €2 per hour, €35 per day | Three days €85, one week €140; hotel guests max €25 per day |
| Stadio-Fortezza | €2 per hour (07:00 to 20:00), €26 per day | 698 spaces; Fortezza entrance closed on Wednesdays |
| Le Fonti di Pescaia | €1 first hour, then €1.50 per hour | 238 spaces, pedestrian exit on Via Ricasoli near Porta Camollia |
| Street bays with meters | €1.50 per hour | Charged 08:00 to 20:00 every day, including Sundays and holidays |
| Autosilo Porta Ovile (private) | From €2.50 per hour on Parclick | The only car park you can reserve online; staffed 08:00 to 20:00 |
All municipal car parks are open 24 hours a day. The figures come from Sigerico’s tariff page and the page of each car park, checked on 8 October 2026.

The multi-storey at the railway station, Piazzale Fratelli Rosselli, is the cheapest sensible option in Siena: €0.50 for the first hour and €2 for the rest of the day. A free escalator, 283 metres long and climbing 62 metres, runs through the Porta Siena shopping centre up to the Antiporto di Camollia, a few hundred metres from Porta Camollia. From there you walk through Porta Camollia and down the main street into the centre. City buses also leave the station about every 15 minutes.
On Via di Fontanella, just inside Porta Tufi and reached from the Siena Sud exit of the ring road. It is the largest of the central car parks and the natural choice for Piazza del Campo, the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia.
On Via Esterna di Fontebranda, on the west side. The free Costone escalator starts 150 metres from the car park, climbs 35 metres over twelve flights and comes out on Via di Valle Piatta, 150 metres from the Duomo. It runs around the clock, which makes this the easiest car park if you do not want to walk uphill.
On Via del Nuovo Asilo by Porta San Marco, close to the Duomo and Santa Maria della Scala. With 202 spaces it is the smallest central car park. One floor takes vehicles up to 2.50 metres high; the ground floor is limited to 1.90 metres and the lower floors to 2.00 metres.
On Via Baldassarre Peruzzi, on the east side. A free escalator links it with the Basilica of San Francesco, and from there Piazza Salimbeni, the main shopping street and Piazza del Campo are a short walk away.
Next to the Medici fortress, the La Lizza gardens and the Artemio Franchi stadium, with entrances on Viale dei Mille and Via della Vecchia. It charges only between 07:00 and 20:00, so evenings and nights cost nothing extra. Two catches: the Fortezza entrance is closed every Wednesday for the weekly market, and the stadium entrance closes when Siena’s football team plays at home.
A private, covered and staffed garage at Via Pian d’Ovile 16. You drive in, show the booking at the office and the staff take it from there. Keep the opening hours in mind: 08:00 to 20:00 from Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 20:00 on Sundays and 09:00 to 21:00 on public holidays, so you cannot collect the car late at night. According to its listing, from 29 June to 2 July and from 13 to 16 August access is via Pian d’Ovile and Garibaldi, so follow the directions in your booking confirmation on those days.

Eight daytime hours and a full 24 hours at the official tariffs, October 2026.
The gap is large. Eight hours cost €2 at the station, €12 on a meter, €11.50 at Le Fonti di Pescaia and €16 in the central car parks or at the Fortezza. Over 24 hours the central car parks reach their €35 daily rate, the Fortezza stops at €26 and the station still costs €2.

Sigerico manages almost 700 metered spaces on the main streets just outside the ZTL. The price is €1.50 per hour or part of an hour, from 08:00 to 20:00, and that includes Sundays and public holidays. The biggest groups of bays are on Via Roma near Porta Romana (103 spaces), in front of the Fortezza on Viale Fruschelli, Via Pannilunghi and Via Vittorio Veneto (106 spaces) and by Porta Laterina (33 spaces). Another 479 paid bays are spread over six residential areas next to the walls, where they share the street with residents-only spaces.
You can pay at the meter in cash or skip it and use an app: SiPark Sosta, EasyPark and Dropticket all work in Siena, let you extend the time from your phone and show how many bays are free. In the car parks with barriers, Telepass has been accepted since 31 March 2026.
There is some, though not much. Terre di Siena, the local tourist board, lists four free areas and admits that they are small and fill early:
If those are full, do not circle for half an hour. At €2 for the day, La Stazione costs the same as a single city bus ticket (€2 when bought before boarding) and has an escalator to the centre.
The limited traffic zone covers the whole centre inside the walls. Under the city’s current rules it applies every day, 24 hours a day, and the gates are controlled by number-plate cameras. There is no quiet hour when visitors may drive in. Every pass through a gate without a permit is a separate fine, which under the Italian Highway Code starts at €83 plus notification costs. With a rental car the company also charges its own fee for passing your details to the police; the amount is in your rental terms.
ZTL checker: may I drive through the gate?
Select your situation.
Sat nav apps do not always know the gates. If the route takes you through a city gate (a porta), stop and check. For how these zones work in other cities, see our guide to ZTL zones in Italy.
If your accommodation is inside the ZTL, the hotel can add your plate to the city’s temporary white list. The rules are tight: at most two entries a day, a stop of no more than 45 minutes each time, and only to load or unload luggage. You have to display the booking confirmation with a parking disc or the pass the hotel gives you. The hotel must send your plate within two working days after you drove in, and the service is free.
In practice: send the hotel your plate before arrival, ask which gate to use, unload, and take the car straight to the car park the hotel recommends. Hotels outside the ZTL cannot register guests.
Motorhomes use the Il Fagiolone area on Strada di Pescaia, reached from the Siena Ovest exit and shared with tourist coaches. It costs €20 per 24 hours with no hourly rate, cannot be reserved, and is paid at the meter by card or cash. There is drinking water, a waste water point, chemical toilet disposal and video surveillance. The Costone escalator to the Duomo is across the road.
Most visitors arrive from Florence on the toll-free Firenze-Siena dual carriageway or come up from Rome on the A1 motorway. You can work out the motorway part with our Italy toll calculator and the fuel with the fuel cost calculator. Siena has no airport of its own, so rental cars are usually collected in Florence or Pisa; there are also a few rental desks in Siena itself if you only need a car for the countryside days. Our guide to car hire in Italy covers deposits, insurance and what to check at pick-up.
Combining Siena with other Tuscan cities? Florence and Pisa have ZTLs of their own: see parking in Florence outside the ZTL and parking in Pisa.
For a day visit, the Stazione car park is the best value: €0.50 for the first hour and €2 for the whole day, with a free escalator up to the Porta Camollia side of the centre. If you want the shortest walk, use Il Campo for Piazza del Campo or Santa Caterina for the Duomo. Both cost €2 per hour, up to €35 per day.
The four central car parks (Il Campo, Il Duomo, Santa Caterina, San Francesco) charge €2 per hour, €35 per day, €85 for three days and €140 per week. Stadio-Fortezza is €2 per hour between 07:00 and 20:00, with a €26 daily rate. Street bays cost €1.50 per hour from 08:00 to 20:00. The Stazione car park is €2 for the whole day.
Yes, but only a little. The local tourist board lists four free areas: Strada di Laterina by the cemetery (about 15 minutes on foot from Piazza del Campo), Il Campino below the Fortezza, Viale Mario Bracci near the hospital (buses 10 and 17) and Strada di Malizia. They are small and fill early. The dependable low-cost option is the Stazione car park at €2 per day.
No. The whole walled centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) that applies 24 hours a day, every day, and cameras read number plates at the gates. Under the Italian Highway Code the fine for entering without a permit starts at €83, and a rental company will add its own handling fee. Park outside the walls and walk or take an escalator.
Only if the hotel is inside the ZTL and registers your number plate with the city. That allows up to two entries a day, each for a stop of no more than 45 minutes to unload luggage. The car then has to go to a car park. Tell the hotel your plate before you arrive and ask for the €25 daily hotel rate in the central car parks.
No. The operator states that street bays are charged from 08:00 to 20:00 including Sundays and public holidays, and the car parks charge every day. Two exceptions are published: the Stazione car park is free on Wednesdays from 08:30 to 15:00, and three streets in the Ravacciano area are free on public holidays.
The municipal car parks cannot be reserved. The one car park you can book online is Autosilo Porta Ovile, a private staffed garage listed on Parclick from €2.50 per hour. It is open from 08:00 to 20:00 (from 09:00 on Sundays), so it suits day visits better than late evenings.
At the Il Fagiolone area on Strada di Pescaia, on the west side of the city near the Costone escalator. It costs €20 per 24 hours, with no hourly rate and no reservations. The area has drinking water, a waste point and video surveillance.
In the municipal multi-storey car parks, yes, with no time limit. At the pay station you press the call button and show your disabled parking card to the camera, and the operator issues an exit ticket. Badge holders can also request free temporary ZTL access online within 48 hours of entering.
