Parking in Santiago de Compostela: Blue Zone, Garages & Free Spots 2026

Parking in Santiago de Compostela follows one golden rule: don't even try to drive to the Cathedral. The old town (casco histórico) is pedestrian and camera-controlled, so pilgrims and visitors park in the ORA blue zone or a garage on its edge and walk in – usually under ten minutes. Blue-zone rates run roughly €0.15 per half hour up to €1.05/hour with a 2-hour cap, and Sundays and holidays are free. Here's the 2026 picture.

The ORA Blue Zone

Regulated hours are Monday–Friday 9:00–14:00 and 16:30–20:00, Saturday 9:00–14:00 – outside those windows, and all day Sunday and holidays, blue bays are free. Most bays cap you at two hours (look for the short 1-hour and long 4-hour variants on the signs). Pay at the meter or with the Moviltik app, which lets you extend remotely while you queue for the Cathedral rooftop tour.

Pilgrim tip: arriving to finish the Camino by car? The garages around Praza de Galicia and the Xoán XXIII area sit closest to the old town – Xoán XXIII is practically at the historic quarter's doorstep.

Garages: the Stress-Free Day

For anything beyond two hours, the underground car parks ringing the centre (Xoán XXIII by the old town, Praza de Galicia, Praza Roxa) run 24/7 at standard Spanish city rates with day caps – far saner than feeding a meter between sights. From Xoán XXIII you surface two minutes from the medieval streets.

Old-town access: the casco histórico is restricted to residents and authorised vehicles, with cameras. Hotel inside the old town? Ask them for the access procedure before you arrive – don't improvise past the bollards.

Rainy-City Logistics

  • Santiago rains ~150 days a year – a covered garage keeps luggage transfers dry
  • Free street spots appear 10–15 minutes out (Belvís, Vista Alegre areas) – fine for long stays
  • Sunday is the free-parking day – and the quietest in the blue zone
