San Lorenzo de El Escorial is one of the easiest day trips from Madrid by car – as long as you know that the blue zone beside the Monastery is charged every day of the week. San Lorenzo de El Escorial has a municipal blue zone (zona azul) with two areas that work differently: a tourist zone on the street beside the Monastery and a commercial zone in the town centre.

Pay at the meter or by phone; the council introduced mobile payment in 2021 and the app accepted is shown on the meters. Residents have their own tariff, so the prices printed for “residentes” do not apply to visitors.
The town hall lists two public car parks, both a few minutes on foot from the Monastery.

A Monastery visit takes two to three hours: the tourist blue zone costs roughly €5–7 for that, with no time limit. On a weekday afternoon or a Sunday, a commercial-zone street is free. For a full day or an overnight stay, use one of the two car parks.
Blue bays in the town centre are only charged Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00. After 15:00 and all day Sunday they are free – a five- to ten-minute walk to the Monastery.
Streets without blue markings further from the centre are free. The town is built on a slope, so expect an uphill or downhill walk.
The Royal Monastery is run by Patrimonio Nacional. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00 from October to March and 10:00–19:00 from April to September, with last admission 75 minutes before closing. The standard ticket costs €14. Because of building work, visitors have entered through the west façade (Patio de Reyes) since February 2026 – check the official ticket site for the current entrance and free-admission times.
