L'Escala summer parking gets brutal between mid-July and late August, when the population of this Costa Brava fishing town swells from 11,000 to roughly 50,000. Plan ahead: the closest blue-zone bays around Riells and Empuries fill before 10am, the Continental garage on Placa Catalunya runs about 2.50 euros per hour with a 22 euro daily cap, and three large free dirt lots ring the town centre. This 2026 guide pulls live rates from the Ajuntament de l'Escala, the Continental operator and ApparkB.
L'Escala uses two paid-zone colours plus generous unrestricted streets on the outskirts. Enforcement is heaviest in July and August. Residents from neighbouring villages in the Alt Emporda can buy a non-resident permit, but tourists pay full rates.
| Zone | Hours | Rate | Max stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue (Zona Blava) | Mon-Sat 09:00-13:30 + 17:00-20:30 | 1.10 euros / hour | 2 hours |
| Green (residents priority) | Mon-Sat 09:00-20:30 continuous | 2.50 euros / hour for visitors | 4 hours |
| White / unrestricted | 24/7 free | 0.00 euros | No limit |
| Pay garage (Continental) | 24/7 | 2.50 euros / hour, 22 euros / day | No limit |
Outside the May to October stretch, almost everything in town reverts to free parking. November to April you can usually park on the seafront promenade without paying, except inside the strict centre near the church.
If you want a guaranteed spot near the beach in summer, book a private garage or covered lot in advance. Below are the operators we have personally used or that locals consistently recommend, with current 2026 rates verified on Parclick and the operator websites.
Underground garage right on Placa Catalunya, two minutes from the harbour and the Riu Rec del Moli walking street. Covered, attended, security cameras. The only properly central paid garage in town.
Large open-air municipal lot a 6-minute walk uphill from the centre. Pay-and-display meters take coins and card. Capacity around 250 spaces and almost never fills, even in August.
Open-air surface lot on the small square next to the post office. Easy access if you arrive from the south, but only about 80 spots, so plan to be there before 9:30am in high season.
Pay car park literally on the sand at Platja de Riells. In July and August it costs 4 euros per hour, capped at 18 euros per day. Cheapest if you arrive before 10am or after 19:00 when most beachgoers leave.
Large fenced lot run by the MAC museum. Use it if you plan to combine the archaeological site with a swim at Platja del Portitxol. Free for ticket holders to the ruins on production of receipt.
Three large free dirt lots ring the centre and one massive overflow lot serves the Empuries area. None are signposted from the highway, so screenshot these locations before you arrive.
Roughly 200 free spots on packed gravel, 4-minute walk to the harbour and 7 minutes to Platja del Port. No time limit, no zone markings. Arrive before 11am in July-August.
Behind the local football stadium, about 12 minutes from the centre on foot. Capacity 300, almost always has space. The road in is unsealed but easy with any rental car.
Massive free unfenced lot south of the medieval village, signposted from the GI-623. Walk 8 minutes through pine trees to reach Sant Marti or the ruins. No facilities, no shade.
L'Escala uses ApparkB (Empuriabrava operator) plus the universal easyPark and Telpark options. Coin-only meters are being phased out but still exist on Carrer Mas Parals and around Placa de l'Esglesia.
The local operator app, available on iOS and Android. Lets you start, extend or stop a session from your phone with no minimum time, so you only pay for the exact minutes used. Free to download, no surcharge.
Both work in L'Escala's blue and green zones. easyPark adds a 0.15 euros surcharge per session, Telpark adds 0.10 euros. They are slightly more expensive than ApparkB but easier if you already use one elsewhere in Spain.
Older blue parquimetres around the church take 0.20 to 2 euros coins only. Maximum 2-hour ticket per visit. Card readers were added to most central machines in 2025 but always carry change as a backup.
| Violation | Fine 2026 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Expired blue zone ticket | 9 euros if paid same day | Pay at the parquimetre to cancel; no points |
| No ticket / wrong zone | 30 euros standard | Reduced to 18 euros if paid within 48 h |
| Green zone (visitor over 4 h) | 50 euros | Camera enforcement on Avinguda Girona |
| Disabled bay misuse | 200 euros + tow | Strict enforcement year-round |
| Loading zone violation | 90 euros | Mon-Sat 08:00-14:00 only |
The narrowest streets here are pedestrian-only, paid blue zone everywhere else. Use Continental garage or Mas Parals municipal and walk in. Free overnight 20:30 to 09:00 on the seafront.
Pay car park on the sand, blue zone in the streets behind, no free option within 10 minutes walk. Bicycle racks if you arrive by e-bike.
Pay lot at the ruins or massive free overflow south of Sant Marti. Avoid driving inside the medieval village, it is residents-only.
Three small free pull-outs along the GIV-6216 leading to Montgo. Capacity is tiny so arrive at sunrise or hike from town.
Most central apartments offer 1 reserved space included. Verify on booking, otherwise factor 22 euros / day for Continental garage. Hotel Voramar and Nieves Mar both have free guest parking.
The Ajuntament added 40 new green-zone bays around Riu Rec del Moli for 2026 to push tourist cars further out. Mas Parals municipal lot was repaved in March and now has six EV charging points (0.45 euros / kWh). The Continental garage raised its hourly rate from 2.20 to 2.50 euros but kept the 22 euros daily cap stable. ApparkB rolled out a new beach-zone tariff starting 1 May 2026.
Free parking exists at three dirt lots ringing the centre (Carrer del Port d'en Perris, Camp de Futbol del Pedrigolet, and the Empuries overflow south of Sant Marti). All other in-town parking is paid May to October. November to April most blue zones revert to free.
The pay car park on Platja de Riells charges 4 euros per hour in summer with an 18 euros daily cap. Blue-zone bays in nearby streets cost 1.10 euros per hour but have a 2-hour limit.
The seafront blue zones become free 20:30 to 09:00. Mas Parals municipal lot is 8 euros for a full 24 hours. Hotels with on-site parking (Voramar, Nieves Mar) include it free for guests.
Mas Parals municipal lot at 8 euros per day is the cheapest paid option. The free dirt lot on Carrer del Port d'en Perris is the cheapest overall but a 4-minute walk from the harbour.
Coin meters still exist but most central machines now accept card. The local ApparkB app is fastest, easyPark and Telpark also work. Coin payment is the cash-only fallback.
No, the official MAC lot charges 5 euros flat. However, the free overflow south of Sant Marti d'Empuries is an 8-minute walk through the pine forest to the ruins entrance.
