Assisi’s medieval centre is closed to visitors’ cars, so everyone parks at the edge of the walls and walks in. Four Saba car parks surround the town and all charge the same: €2.00 per hour, up to €18 per day from March to December. The cheaper alternative is Santa Maria degli Angeli in the valley (€1.00 per hour, €11 per day) plus the bus. This guide tells you which car park is nearest to which sight, how the new ZTL camera gates work, and when the town is at its busiest.

Assisi’s walled hill town is a limited-traffic zone, so visitors park at the edge and walk in. Four car parks run by Saba ring the walls, one near each main gate, and all four charge the same tariff. A fifth, cheaper Saba car park is down in the valley at Santa Maria degli Angeli, linked to the upper town by bus.

Since the price is the same, choose by what you want to see first.
The closest car park to the Basilica of St Francis, at the lower, western end of the town on Viale Guglielmo Marconi. About 265 spaces. Note that one of the ZTL camera gates is on Via Marconi, right beside it – follow the car-park signs and do not drive on past the entrance.
About 300 spaces on Viale Vittorio Emanuele II, below the southern walls. Convenient for the Basilica of Santa Chiara, Piazza del Vescovado and Piazza del Comune.
About 220 spaces at Piazza Porta Nuova, on the eastern side, also close to Santa Chiara. Saba’s page recently carried a notice that the escalators were temporarily out of service – check before relying on them if stairs are a problem.
The largest, with about 390 spaces at Piazza Matteotti, at the top of the town: closest to the cathedral of San Rufino, the Roman amphitheatre and the path to the Rocca Maggiore. From here the visit is all downhill. The bus from Santa Maria degli Angeli also stops here.
Only the Basilica: Giovanni Paolo II. The whole town in one walk: park at Matteotti and walk downhill to the Basilica, then take the bus or a taxi back up – or do it the other way round if you prefer to climb first.
Saba’s car park on Via Giosuè Borsi in Santa Maria degli Angeli, the valley town 4–5 km below Assisi, costs €1.00 per hour and €11 per day. It is next to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli – which holds the Porziuncola chapel and is worth the visit in itself – and near the railway station.
Busitalia’s Line C runs from the station up to Piazza Matteotti in about 15 minutes. A ticket costs €1.30 if bought in advance and €2.00 on board, and is valid for 90 minutes.
Assisi installed five electronic gates at the entrances to the historic centre – Porta San Giacomo, Largo Properzio, Via Porta Perlici, Via Marconi and Via del Turrione. After a trial period they have been issuing fines since 16 September 2026.

The hours were described as experimental and may change, so read the electronic sign at the gate. If you are staying inside the walls, give your number plate and dates to the hotel before you arrive: the accommodation registers it with the Comune so that you can drive in to unload.
Assisi receives pilgrims all year, but the car parks are under most pressure at Easter, during Calendimaggio in early May, and around the feast of St Francis on 4 October – which from 2026 is once again a national holiday in Italy. 2026 is also the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death, with extra visitors throughout the year. On those days, arrive before 10:00 or use Santa Maria degli Angeli and the bus.
The hermitage on Monte Subasio, about 4 km above the town, has only a small parking area near the entrance, and it fills quickly. Go early or late in the day, and expect restrictions for larger vehicles on holidays.
