Leiria is central Portugal's most convenient rental base – a working city between Lisbon and Porto with six brand desks, and the springboard for Fátima, Batalha, Nazaré and Óbidos. Low-season economy cars start around €10–16/day; most visitors either pick up in the city or land at Porto (∼1 hr) or Lisbon (∼2 hrs). This hub gathers our Leiria price data and links every local company review.

Leiria's castle town sits 20 minutes from Fátima and Batalha – a car makes the whole Silver Coast a day-trip zone.
City-branch prices track the national market: cheap in winter, tight in July–August. Booked 3–5 weeks ahead, expect roughly the following in 2026:
Average Daily Rates in Leiria by Season
Booked 3–5 weeks in advance, prices in EUR
| Season | Manual Economy | Manual Compact | Automatic Compact |

| Low (Nov–Feb) | €10–16 | €12–20 | €28–42 |
| Shoulder (Mar–May, Oct) | €16–26 | €20–30 | €36–50 |
| Peak (Jun–Sep) | €26–40 | €30–46 | €48–70 |
Peak economy weeks run roughly €180–300; automatics are scarce at city branches – reserve early.

Six brands keep desks in or around the city: Avis and Europcar in town, Hertz on the EN113 in the Zona Industrial, Sixt on Rua Caldas da Rainha, plus Budget and Keddy.
Arriving by air? Porto (OPO) is about an hour north, Lisbon (LIS) two hours south – both have bigger, cheaper airport markets, so compare a city pickup against collecting on landing. Our Leiria booking-tips guide covers the decision in detail.
Leiria's desks are small – service quality swings with the branch, not the brand. Scores below come from our per-company reviews (Trustpilot / Google Maps, mid-2026).
The city desk rates around 4.2 on Google – solid value inside the Avis network. Read our Budget Leiria review.
Keddy bookings are honoured at the Europcar desk – cheaper rates, same cars. Details in our Keddy Leiria review.
Both keep proper city branches with wide fleets; local Google scores hover around 3.9. See the Avis and Europcar Leiria reviews.
Sixt Portugal's Trustpilot sits near 2.8/5 with a high share of 1-star reviews about deposits and damage claims. The Leiria office on Rua Caldas da Rainha can be fine – but pre-book excess cover and photograph everything. Full story in our Sixt Leiria review.
A brand-name office, but it sits in the Zona Industrial – about 2 km from the centre, taxi or L1 bus. Peak economy weeks run €180–300. See the Hertz Leiria review.
Reputation Scores: Leiria Desks
From our company reviews; TP = Trustpilot, G = Google Maps (local desk), June 2026
Leiria sits on the A1 and A8 corridors – both electronic-toll roads, so take the transponder if you'll use motorways. The rewarding day-trip circle is mostly toll-light: Fátima (20 min), Batalha and Alcobaça monasteries, Nazaré's big-wave coast and Óbidos are all within 45 minutes.
A peak-summer economy week booked a month ahead lands around €180–300 including basic cover. Fuel for the classic Silver Coast circuit adds surprisingly little – distances are short.
For the city itself, no. For what makes the region worth visiting – Fátima, Batalha, Nazaré, Óbidos – a car beats the sparse regional buses comfortably.
If you land at Porto or Lisbon, collecting at the airport is usually cheaper and saves a train leg. Pick up in Leiria when you're already based here.
Yes if you'll use the A1/A8 motorways – Portugal's electronic tolls can't be paid in cash. For local driving on the N-roads you can skip it.
Budget and Keddy currently rate best locally; Sixt's Portuguese Trustpilot is the weakest – see the score chart and per-company reviews above.
In small numbers – city branches stock mostly manuals. Book an automatic several weeks ahead, especially for summer.
