The classic Estoril coastal loop runs Estoril – Cascais – Guincho – Cabo da Roca – Sintra and back: 57 km and about 1 h 15 of driving without traffic. The coast roads (the Avenida Marginal and the N247) have no tolls, the car park at Cabo da Roca is free in 2026, and a petrol car uses about €7 of fuel for the whole loop. Plan half a day with stops, and leave the car outside Sintra’s historic centre, which is closed to visitors’ cars. Here is the route leg by leg, with times, parking and costs.
No car yet? Lisbon Airport is 31 km and about 27 minutes from Estoril on the A5 (tolled): compare car hire at Lisbon Airport, or see the offices in town in our guide to car rental in Estoril.

Measured with OSRM routing on 28 October 2026 without traffic; allow more time on summer weekends.
Just under 4 km along the seafront past Tamariz beach, about 7 minutes. The Marginal is busy at weekends and has many pedestrian crossings, so treat it as a cruise, not a sprint.
Two kilometres past Cascais, stop at the Boca do Inferno (“Mouth of Hell”) sea cliffs, then follow the N247 for 8 km along the dunes to Praia do Guincho, kitesurf country with strong Atlantic crosswinds. Hold the wheel firmly and give cyclists plenty of room.
From Guincho it is 11.6 km, about 13 minutes, to the cape that marks mainland Europe’s westernmost point. The car park is free in 2026: Sintra council has said it plans to charge here in future, but no tariff is in force yet. Since 23 July 2026 the lighthouse itself is open to visitors: the Essential Visit costs €5 and the Panoramic Visit with the climb to the balcony €10. The car park fills by midday in summer, and parts of the cliff path are unfenced, so mind the wind.
The N247 climbs through Colares into the Sintra hills: 16.7 km and about 25 minutes from the cape. Do not try to drive into the old town: its core has been closed by electronic gates since 2023, and only residents, hotels with their own parking, taxis and deliveries may pass. Private cars are not allowed up to the Pena Palace either. Park at the council’s Lourel car park (about 540 free spaces) and take bus 434 or 435 to the palaces. Since 8 July 2026 tour coaches are also kept out of the centre.
The return is 15 km and about 17 minutes on the N9 towards Alcabideche; the fastest route uses a short stretch of the A16/IC30. If you head on to Lisbon instead, the A5 is quicker but tolled.

Fuel is the main cost. Petrol 95 averaged €2.035 a litre and diesel €2.190 in Portugal this week (DGEG national average, 27 October 2026). At 6 litres per 100 km, the 57 km loop uses about 3.4 litres of petrol, roughly €7. The coast roads are toll-free; only the A16/IC30 stretch and the A5 to Lisbon are motorways, see tolls in Portugal explained. Parking at Cabo da Roca and Lourel is free; in Cascais and Estoril street parking is paid, see parking in Cascais.
Coastal drive budget: car hire + fuel
Enter the daily rate from your own quote; €25 is only an example, and rental prices change a lot with the season. The fuel price is the DGEG national average for petrol 95 on 27 October 2026 (diesel €2.190); 57 km is the full loop. Add-on prices are typical examples, not offers.
The loop Estoril – Cascais – Guincho – Cabo da Roca – Sintra – Estoril is 57 km and about 75 minutes of driving without traffic. With stops at Boca do Inferno, Guincho, Cabo da Roca and Sintra, plan half a day.
Not on the coast roads: the Avenida Marginal and the N247 are free. The fastest return from Sintra uses a short stretch of the A16/IC30, and the A5 between Estoril and Lisbon is tolled.
About 3.4 litres for 57 km at 6 litres per 100 km. With petrol 95 at the national average of €2.035 a litre (27 October 2026), that is roughly €7.
At the car park by the lighthouse, which is free in 2026. Sintra council plans to charge there in future. It fills by midday in summer, so arrive before 11:00 or late in the afternoon.
Not into the historic core: electronic gates let in only residents, hotels with their own parking, taxis and deliveries, and private cars cannot drive up to the Pena Palace. Park at the free Lourel car park and take bus 434 or 435.
No. Expect heavy weekend traffic on the Marginal, strong crosswinds at Guincho and narrow bends and fog in the Sintra hills. Drive with lights on in the woods.
