Street parking in the centre of Brussels costs €3.60 for the first hour and €9.20 for two hours, with a maximum stay of 4.5 hours, and it is free on Sundays and public holidays. The cheapest option is a Park+Ride on the edge of the city: four are free, and Ceria-Coovi is free if you continue by metro. A foreign-registered car must also be registered for the low-emission zone, free of charge, or it is fined €150. Do you need a car? Not in Brussels itself: the centre is compact and the metro, trams and trains cover the rest. A car pays off for the Ardennes, the coast, Waterloo or several Flemish towns in one trip. The Brussels-Capital Region is made up of 19 municipalities, and three sets of rules matter to a visitor with a car. The whole region is a low-emission zone, so a foreign-registered car has to be registered online. Street parking is divided into coloured zones with one regional tariff. And on the edge of the city there are Park+Ride car parks, several of them free, with a metro or tram into the centre.

The low-emission zone (LEZ) covers all 19 municipalities and applies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Only the Ring motorway (R0) and a few access roads to Park+Ride car parks are outside it. Since 1 January 2026 a diesel car must meet at least the Euro 6 standard and a petrol, LPG or CNG car at least Euro 3. Euro 5 diesels and Euro 2 petrol cars are no longer admitted.

Checks are automatic: 353 cameras at the entrances and inside the zone read every number plate. No more than one fine is issued per vehicle every three months. For the vehicles banned since January 2026, the first recorded offence leads to a warning letter and the €350 fine can follow from three months later. If your car does not qualify, five Park+Ride car parks can be reached without breaking the rules: Ceria-Coovi, Lennik, Stalle, Crainhem and UZ Brussel. A rental car with Belgian number plates needs no registration by you.
The tariff is set by the Region and rises steeply with time in the central zones, which is meant to keep spaces turning over. In the grey zone the first half-hour costs €0.90, the second €2.70, each of the second, third and fourth hours €5.60 and the last half-hour €2.70.

In the City of Brussels the whole Pentagon, the area inside the inner ring road that includes the Grand-Place, is a grey zone. So is the Louise-Stéphanie end of Avenue Louise. Both are charged from 09:00 to 21:00, Monday to Saturday. The European quarter is a grey zone charged from 09:00 to 19:00, and the residential green zones such as Laeken are also charged until 19:00. Other municipalities set their own hours, so read the sign on the meter.
A short stop is free. In the 13 municipalities managed by parking.brussels you can take a free 15-minute ticket once per period, and the City of Brussels gives 20 free minutes at the meter. You still have to take the ticket or start a session in an app.
Brussels does not issue a classic fine for this but a fixed parking fee: €37 in the blue and green zones and €47 in the grey zone, each per period of 4.5 hours, and €42 per two hours in the red and orange zones. Parking in a delivery bay or a Kiss & Ride bay costs €100. For foreign number plates the fee is collected by Euro Parking Collection (EPC).
The Park+Ride car parks are run by parking.brussels, the regional parking agency, not by the transport company STIB. For a day in the centre they are the cheapest choice, and they keep you out of the dense traffic of the inner city.

The car parks are open 24 hours a day, but a car may not stay longer than ten consecutive days, and the free ones are regularly full on weekday mornings. Current conditions are on the Park&Ride page of parking.brussels.
Underground car park beneath Place d’Espagne, with its entrance at Rue du Marché aux Herbes 104, a short walk from the Grand-Place. 913 spaces, open 24 hours a day, height limit 2.00 m. The operator’s published tariff is €1.00 per 15 minutes.
Covered car park at Rue de Ligne 25, on the upper side of the centre near the cathedral. Open 24 hours, height limit 1.90 m. Parclick showed it from €7.20 for two hours on 13 October 2026, with free cancellation up to one hour before arrival.

You pay at the meter or with a phone app. parking.brussels lists seven apps: EasyPark, 4411, Seety, Yellowbrick, Indigo Neo, Autlo and Cogo. 4411 and Yellowbrick work in every municipality; the others cover most of them. Each app adds its own charge, from nothing at Indigo Neo to €0.45 per session at 4411 or 15% at EasyPark. Payment by text message to 4411 works with Belgian mobile numbers only.

In the city centre, yes. The Pentagon and Louise zones are charged from Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 21:00, so Sundays and public holidays are free. The exception is the Heysel-Verregat zone around the Atomium, which is charged every day. Car parks charge their normal rates.
