Hertz is a full-service option at Porto Airport with a newer fleet and a DiscoverCars rating of 8/10. You follow the car-rental signs from arrivals to the Hertz desk/area; note that the shuttle now runs about every 15 minutes (it used to be every 5), so allow a little time at busy waves. As a global brand it is convenient and predictable, but pricier than the locals and worth photographing at return given the usual brand-level damage-billing complaints. A solid mainstream pick if you want a recognised name and a modern car.

DiscoverCars 8/10. Convenient and predictable, pricier than locals; film the car at return to defend against damage-billing errors and query any extra fee on the spot.

Hertz’s own low-cost brand – cheaper headline but card/coverage complaints and bills above the quote. The full Hertz product is smoother.

Hertz includes CDW with an excess blocked on your card and sells SuperCover at the desk. Stand-alone excess insurance bought beforehand (€4–7/day) is cheaper and refunds your excess directly. Photograph the car at pickup and return given brand-level damage-billing complaints.
The ex-SCUT motorways lost their tolls in stages (A24 in January 2025, A25 in January 2026) and the northern A28 sections towards Viana do Castelo are free, but the A28 Porto–Póvoa de Varzim stretch is still tolled. The A1 (south to Aveiro/Coimbra/Lisbon), A3 (north to Braga and Spain) and parts of the A4 also remain tolled, mostly electronic. With a rental, take the company’s Via Verde transponder (small daily fee) or expect tolls plus a €25–50 admin fee billed afterwards. Fuel in August 2026 is about €1.99/L petrol and ~€2.03/L diesel; supermarket pumps cheapest. Return the car full.
Same 8/10 rating, usually lower price.
The shuttle is now ~15 minutes apart – factor it into a tight connection.
Douro Valley day trips, the A28 coast (toll-free beyond Póvoa) and Braga/Guimarães are all within easy reach; the city centre itself is walkable.
