How airport transfers work in Portugal

Portugal’s airports could hardly be more different from each other. Lisbon’s is one of Europe’s most central – about 7 km from downtown with a direct metro connection – so plenty of travellers don’t pre-book anything at all. Porto is similar: Metro Line E runs straight from the terminal into the city. Faro is the opposite case – the airport has no rail link, and the Algarve resorts it serves are spread 25 to 70 minutes along the coast, which is why pre-booked transfers are far more popular there than anywhere else in the country. And on Madeira there are no trains at all: it’s the Aerobus, a taxi, or a pre-booked car down the (famously steep) roads into Funchal.

Pre-book, or just grab a taxi on arrival?

A useful rule of thumb: the further your accommodation is from the terminal, the more a pre-booked transfer earns its keep. Heading into central Lisbon or Porto as a couple with cabin luggage, public transport is cheap, frequent and safe – save your money. On the Algarve the maths changes: a licensed taxi from Faro Airport to Albufeira costs around €41 by day and €49 at night and weekends under the official fare table, while a pre-booked private transfer costs about the same – except the driver is already waiting with a name board, the price is locked in, and child seats can be arranged in advance. Families, groups of three or more, and anyone landing after 22:00 are nearly always better off booking ahead; most transfers on our guides cancel free up to 24 hours before pick-up.

Which airport for which region?

Flying to the Algarve (Albufeira, Vilamoura, Portimão, Lagos, Tavira)? That’s Faro. Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais and the Setúbal coast are all served by Lisbon Airport. Porto covers the north – the Douro Valley, Braga and Guimarães. Madeira is its own world: the airport sits at Santa Cruz, about 20 minutes east of Funchal. If your trip spans more than one region, it’s usually cheaper to fly into one airport and rent a car than to chain long-distance transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Faro (Algarve), Lisbon, Porto and Madeira (Funchal) – each has its own detailed transfer guide with current prices and booking links.

If you're staying at one resort, a transfer is usually simpler. If you plan to explore beyond your hotel, a rental car often works out better value – compare both on each airport's page.
