Planning airport transfers in Croatia

Croatia’s two busiest airports ask for very different plans. In Zagreb you have the full urban toolkit: an official shuttle bus into the centre, fixed-fare airport taxis, and ride-hailing apps that work reliably. Dubrovnik is the one that catches people out – Uber does not operate there, so once you land your on-demand options shrink to the taxi rank and whatever you booked in advance. In peak season, when several flights and cruise arrivals land within the same hour, a pre-booked transfer with a driver waiting in arrivals is worth far more in Dubrovnik than almost anywhere else on this site.

Pre-book or pay on arrival?

For Zagreb, arriving solo or as a couple, the shuttle bus or a fixed-fare taxi is perfectly good – pre-booking is a convenience rather than a necessity. For Dubrovnik, flip that advice: prices at the rank climb in high season and queues can be long, while pre-booked private transfers lock in the price and usually cancel free up to 24 hours before pick-up. Croatia uses the euro since 2023, so there’s no currency juggling on either route – but do carry a card that works abroad, as some drivers prefer cash.

Heading further down the Adriatic?

Dubrovnik is also the practical gateway to Kotor in Montenegro – many visitors land at Dubrovnik and cross the border by pre-booked transfer rather than flying into Podgorica or Tivat. Our Kotor transfer guide covers all three approaches. For the northern end of the region, see the Ljubljana guide (Slovenia’s capital is barely two hours from Zagreb by road) and the Tirana guide for Albania.
