Parking near Amsterdam Centraal Station is the most expensive in the Netherlands – daytime street rates hit 7.50 euros per hour and central garages charge up to 84 euros per day. Plan ahead: the P+R “Park and Ride” model is the only sane option for tourists – park outside the ring road for 1 to 8 euros all day and take the metro into Centraal in 15 minutes. This 2026 guide pulls live rates from Amsterdam Gemeente, Q-Park, Interparking, and the official P+R portal.

Understanding Amsterdam parking zones

Amsterdam splits into roughly six paid-parking tariff zones based on distance from Centraal. Zone 1 (Centrum, including the canal belt and Centraal station) is by far the most expensive at 7.50 euros per hour. Enforcement runs 09:00 to midnight, seven days a week.

Pay garage24/75.50 to 7.50 euros / hour, 50-84 euros / dayCentraal area
Skip street parking entirely if you are visiting only for the day: 7.50 euros per hour means a 6-hour visit costs 45 euros, plus the risk of fines from the constantly patrolling scan cars. P+R Sloterdijk or P+R Olympisch Stadion at 1 euros for the whole day is the obvious choice.

Parking enforcement uses scan cars that read every parked vehicle's plate against the OTA database. Tickets arrive by post a week later. There is no ticket-on-windshield warning.

P+R Park and Ride – the smart way to visit Centraal

Amsterdam runs eight Park-and-Ride lots on the city perimeter. Park outside the ring road for 1 euros per weekday or 8 euros per weekend (24-hour cap), and you get free metro tickets for up to five people if you arrive after 10am. The system is designed to keep cars out of the centre and works exceptionally well.

P+R Sloterdijk (best for Centraal)

Closest P+R to Centraal Station – the Sprinter train (line 9460) reaches Centraal in 12 minutes. 1700 spaces, almost never fills up except during Sail Amsterdam (every 5 years). The free transit ticket covers your return journey for up to 5 people.

P+R Olympisch Stadion

Tram 24 to Centraal in 22 minutes. Good if you also plan to visit Vondelpark or Museum Quarter on the way back. 600 spaces, fills up on Ajax match days.

P+R Bos en Lommer

Cheaper alternative to Sloterdijk, but tram 7 is a 25-minute journey through the centre. 700 spaces. Best if your accommodation is in the western canal belt.

P+R rates were 1 euros weekday / 8 euros weekend at the time of writing. Confirm on the official portal (amsterdam.nl/p-en-r) before traveling – rates change annually with the Gemeente budget. Free metro tickets only valid 10:00 onwards.

Paying for parking: apps and meters

Amsterdam is almost cashless. Use the official Yellowbrick or Parkmobile apps. Coin meters were retired in 2024.

Parkmobile

The dominant Dutch parking app. Lets you start, extend or stop a session by license plate. No surcharge in Amsterdam (unlike Belgium or Germany where Parkmobile adds 0.20 euros per session). Recommended.

Pre-load your Parkmobile account with credit before arriving – pay-as-you-go via foreign card sometimes triggers fraud blocks at the high Amsterdam hourly rates.

Yellowbrick

The other widely-used app, accepted everywhere Parkmobile is. Slightly different interface, identical pricing. Both apps integrate with the Gemeente scan car system, so neither is “better” for licence-plate enforcement.

Card-only meters

Card-and-contactless terminals at every parking zone. Tickets print with your registration plate. Maximum 4-hour session in Centrum. American Express not accepted at all street meters; carry Visa or Mastercard.

Parking by neighbourhood near Centraal

Centraal Station immediate area

Q-Park Stationsplein and Parking Center Oosterdok. Both within 6-minute walk to platforms. Heavy luggage? Choose Q-Park – it has elevators direct to the station tunnel.

IJDock and Westerdok

Interparking IJDock and Smart Hotel garages. 8-10 minute walk over the bridge to Centraal. Best ratio of price to convenience for hotel guests staying nearby.

Canal belt (Centrum)

Street parking exists but at 7.50 euros per hour. Hotels Pulitzer, Toren, Andaz include valet parking – confirm at booking. Otherwise use Q-Park Bijenkorf or Q-Park Singelgracht.

Red Light District / De Wallen

Do not even attempt street parking here – the lanes are pedestrian-priority and Q-Park Stationsplein is the closest legitimate option. 5-minute walk from the garage.

NDSM Werf (north Amsterdam)

Free unrestricted parking near the IJ ferry to Centraal. The ferry is free, runs every 15 minutes, takes 10 minutes to cross. Park here if you want adventure-tourist economy.

Scam to watch for at Centraal: Around the IJDock and Stationsplein garage entrances, individuals sometimes approach you offering “cheaper parking” 5 minutes away for cash. They are not authorized; the spots they direct you to are illegal and your car will be towed. Use only metered street, official garage, or P+R lots.
